US Open Betting Tips & Predictions 2021

A European leads the betting just days before the 2021 US Open as Spain’s Jon Rahm has emerged as many people’s US Open pick. He has been largely fancied since his mesmerising third round at The Memorial Tournament, where he raced in to six stroke lead. Sadly, it was all for nothing as he was forced to withdraw the next day due to returning a positive Covid test but has since been cleared by the medics and is set to line up on Thursday. Providing the illness hasn’t taken anything away from him, it is hoped by Euro fans that he can pick up where he left off. He has shown good form at Torrey Pines previously so there is hope.

2020 US Masters winner Dustin Johnson, who won the 2016 US Open and is in search of his second US Open title, and third major overall, will also be present on the Californian course this week. Johnson hasn't been playing anything close to what he is capable of lately, not since winning in Saudi Arabia in February, but he is the world number one and knows what it takes to win a major.

World number two Justin Thomas has been priced up at 22/1 by the bookmakers which seems extremely generous. He has had as good a 2021 as anyone on tour and that price surely needs to be capitalised on. Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau has also been off the boil for a little while now, perhaps playing on courses that don’t suit his game. Since winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March and a top three finish a week later in the Players Championship, he has posted just one top ten finish. He has also missed the cut twice here at Torrey Pines in the Farmers Insurance, so we don’t hold a lot of hope.

Second favourite Brooks Koepka, who has been involved in a social media feud with DeCahmbeau, missed the cut in the Palmetto Championship and has not long returned from knee surgery and is yet to get back to his best, save for a USPGA Championship runner up last month. He does enjoy this tourney though, having won the event in both 2017 and 2018.

Xander Schauffele is a good one for a top ten finish in this event and did OK in the US Masters, although he doesn’t hold the best Torrey Pines form. Justin Rose has placed in the top eight in two out of three majors this year and is a former winner at this course and in this event so expect him to be the highest placed Englishman.

Popular US Open Betting Markets

Golf is one of the most popular sports to bet on at any online bookmaker. There are many reasons for this, but we think the main one is the sheer variety and wealth of bets available, which far outweighs other games.

Outright Winner

This is a simple wager, perhaps the most straightforward in the whole of betting, and all that needs to be decided and backed with a stake is a selection, from you the punter, on who will win the US Open.

Each-Way

If, for absolutely any reason whatsoever, you are harbouring doubts about your selection’s potential performance, then you can always reassure your bet by making it each-way. This way, your pick for outright winner can come within the designated places for the tournament. What’s more, many golf betting sites offer promotions on the amount of places they will pay out on in golf majors such as the US Open.

Three Ball

This bet works by selecting a player out of a twosome to post the best score in that day’s round. It does not matter how well the players perform in the wider tournament, so long as, out of the three in their grouping, your pick fares better.

Winning Nationality

With a bet like this, what is required from the bettor is to predict the nationality of the eventual tournament winner. It is worth taking into consideration the overwhelming amount of times this event has been won by US nationals, but that’s not to say that others cannot.

Tournament Structure for the US Open

The US Open golf tournament is a stroke play event, played over 72 holes and has been since 1898. That is four days play, shooting 18 holes per round. The aim of a stroke play event is that players aim to shoot as far under par as possible to build an accumulative score over the entire four days of the tournament. Most of the time, by the end of play on Sunday which is the tourney’s fourth day, one player will likely have gone clear of the rest of the field and post the best score – this will put them top of the leaderboard. If they finish the tournament on top of the leaderboard then they are crowned the champion. If players are tied after the four rounds have been completed, then a full 18 hole round between the tied players is enforced the next day in order to find a tournament winner.

Along with the US Masters, The Open Championship and the PGA Championship, it is one of golf’s majors. Play begins on Thursday and ends on the third Sunday in June each year. The event is staged by the United States Golf Association (USGA) and carries a prize pool of £12.5 million, the highest of all the majors. The US Open has no fixed venue, changing courses each season.

History of the US Open

The first ever US Open was played in one day on a nine hold course on October 4, 1895 over 36 holes at the Newport Golf and Country Club in Newport, Rhode Island. There were 11 entrants, 10 of which were professional as well as one amateur. The winner was a 21-year-old Englishman, Horace Rawlins, who took home $150. In fact, in the early years, the British did exceptionally well at the tournament, enjoying years of dominance that lasted until 1911, when John J. McDermott became the first American winner at age 19 and is still the youngest winner in the Open’s history.

In 1925, Scotsman Willie MacFarlane was crowned the champion after which the Americans dominated for years until South African legend Gary Player won the event in 1965. From 1994 onwards, international challengers began to perform better with increasing regularity. In fact, on four consecutive renewals, between 2004 and 2007, non-Americans would reign supreme. In 1898, the competition was lengthened to the more familiar 72 holes of stroke play. Regional qualifying tournaments were introduced in 1924 to manage the number of players competing.

ThePuntersPage Final Say

With 156 players and the joint biggest prize pool in golf, the US Open is one of the biggest and best events in golf. The tournament’s open structure might well make for a large field and amateur involvement but, more often than not, winners have been drawn from the elite pool. However, this is a tourney known for shock results – such as when amateur qualifier Lucas Glover won in 2009 – which makes it great for golf betting.
