PGA Championship Betting Tips & Predictions 2021

Two times PGA Championship winner, Rory McIlroy, heads to Kiawah Island as the clear favourite to lift the Wanamaker Trophy for a third time. A win here this year would also represent a first major win for the Northern Irishman in seven years, although he did register an impressive win at Wells Fargo Championship earlier in May. McIlroy loves this course, and a fifth career major, which at some point seems inevitable, looks a distinct possibility here.

Over the past few seasons, McIlroy hasn’t seemed to enjoy himself when heading into an event as the favourite, possibly finding the burden to much to handle. But, having implemented significant changes to his background team, the improvement to his game has already been evident. There is genuine hope now that his best form is close to returning which, coupled with his Kiawah Island history, makes him the outstanding candidate this week.

This being a major, all the big names that missed last week’s ATT&T Bryon Nelson will return to claim their slice of the biggest prize pool in golf. That means Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson and 2017 champ Justin Thomas are all in the hunt for the Wanamaker. Then there is the rejuvenated Jordan Spieth who went so close at Augusta National in the last major, as well as the brutal Bryson DeChambeau who should enjoy what, at 7,876 yards, will be the longest course in major history.

World No 1 Dustin Johnson is another who has been out of sorts of late but one with too much quality to be ignored, especially given that this is a home tournament for the man from South Carolina.

Somehow, Jon Rahm is still waiting for his maiden major and has been off the pace for a while now. Rahm tied for fifth at last month's Masters, which made for his sixth top 10 finish in a major, the best of which was his third place finish at the 2019 US Open. If current form is anything to go by, the 14/1 offered on the world number three doesn’t look as though it represents the best of value.

Far more interesting is the money offered on Texan Jordan Spieth who has really found his form recently following a plummet down the rankings where he almost fell out of the world’s top 100. Taking down the Texas Open before going deep at the Masters, he also went well last week in the AT&T Byron Nelson. This being the only major he has yet to win, victory here would complete the grand slam and he could be well in with a shot of doing so. He certainly has the skills to deal with a coastal course such as this and is a definite one to watch out for.

Popular PGA Championship Betting Markets

Few sports are as  suited to betting as golf, Large fields of competitors tend to make for generous odds even on the tournament favourites, plus there are seemingly limitless ways to bet on this magnificent game. Below is just a taster.

Outright Winner Betting

With an outright winner bet, bettors are aiming to successfully predict who the winner of the tournament will be. This bet really is as simple as that. There is nothing complicated about it and payouts are calculated according to the outright odds you accepted when you placed the bet. If the chosen one delivers and your pick wins the tourney, you will get paid.

Top 5/10/20 Finish Betting

The purpose of this market is to pick a golfer that finishes within a certain number of positions from the top. This could be a top five finish, a top 10 finish or a top 20 finish. So long as your pick finishes as per your prediction, the bet will pay out. This isn't the same thing as an each-way bet where two stakes are split evenly over a win bet and a place bet – the payout of which is determined by how many places your bookmaker will payout for – but instead literally rewarding punters for correctly predicting that a certain player will finish in the top 5, top 10 or top 20 of competitors.

Highest Placed National Betting

Because the PGA Championship is an international major, participants are drawn from all over the world featuring many different nationalities. With events such as this, bookmakers will accept bets on players to perform better than their fellow countrymen. So, be they Irish, Italian or Spanish, as long as your pick outperforms everyone else from the same nation, then the bet’s a winner. Many bookmakers offer the same bet but for best continental performers such as the highest finishing Asian. However, the most popular form of continental finisher betting is for highest placed European.

Hole-in-One Betting

For those that don’t know, a hole-in-one is where a golfer gets the ball in the hole from their first hit off the tee. As rare as it is, bookmakers do accept bets on a hole-in-one occurring during a tournament. In 2019, Lucas Bjerregaard made a hole-in-one from 206 yards during the PGA Championship and one year later at the 2020 PGA Championship, Byeong Hun An recorded another.

Tournament Structure For Golf US PGA Championship

This event has no fixed venue but does overwhelmingly take place in the Eastern half of the USA. In fact, in the tournament’s history, it has only ever been held in the west eleven times so far.

As is standard, play runs from Thursday through Sunday, and players take on a round of 18 holes per day. After 36 holes, players that are posting low scores are removed from play, while the rest of the field continues to participate over the weekend. By Sunday, the final day of play, a winner should have been established after everyone has finished their final 18 holes. If not, a play-off will be initiated in order to find a winner.

Winners of the US PGA are automatically invited to play in the other three majors, The US Masters, US Open and The Open Championship plus the unofficial fifth major The Players Championship for the next five years. Winners are also entitled to return and compete here for life.

History of the PGA Championship

The PGA Championship has been held at various venues across the USA, and for most of its history, has taken place in August. From 2019 onwards, it moved to May, making it the second major of the season. The tournament started out in 1916 and was initially a match play event. Today, though, it is a stroke play event after making the switch in 1958.

In February 1916, the Professional Golfers Association of America (PGA) was formed, and they hosted their first PGA Championship in October that same year at the Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, New York. Jim Barnes was the first-ever winner and was awarded the Wanamaker Trophy, named after Rodman Wanamaker, an influential figure in the tournament’s conception. This trophy is still awarded to the winners today. Typically, the PGA Championship has been played in the Eastern half of the United States. In fact, in its history, it has only been played in the West 11 times, most recently in 2020.

The PGA Championship is the second major of the golf season and one that everyone looks forward to. As with all majors, the game’s biggest names prepare all year round to win one of the career-defining tournaments. It is also the most pro-scoring major, which is why it has traditionally produced long shot winners and, more often than the other majors, produces long-odds winners. This is just one of the reasons why bettors love it so much.
