We’re back for the opening meeting of the season at Britain’s premier racecourse. York’s Dante Festival is essentially the proving ground for some of the country’s most prestigious races to come. We may see a Derby or Royal Ascot winner among my day one racing tips, while my best bet of the day is heading for the Oaks.

Time For Sandals wins at Ascot ahead of her Minster Stakes run at York.

I have four York tips today, and more to come across Thursday and Friday’s cards. Legacy Link is the NAP of the day as she looks to progress towards the Oaks, but there is plenty of value in my other three shouts on what is a busy opening day on the Knavesmire.

Prices are provided by bet365, Spreadex, and StarSports, some of the best bookmakers available.

Klassleader (2:20 – Jorvik Handicap) – Showing the Way to the Ebor

The mile-and-a-half Jorvik Handicap offers the winner automatic entry into this summer’s Ebor at York. There’s plenty of motivation for trainers to get this right, and the man in pole position is definitely Yorkshireman William Haggas.

The Newmarket-based handler runs Klassleader in this race and, though this is his first run of the season, he has been supported steadily this week amid positive reports from the gallops.

Klassleader has the right profile for this race and is drawn in stall five against 10 rivals. He can lay up behind the early pace and has York’s long, fair straight to get himself organised under Tom Marquand. He’s the first of my tips for York races this week.

Why I’m Backing Klassleader:

  • List Icon

    Strong form and still improving

  • List Icon

    Well handicapped on three-year-old form

  • List Icon

Trainer knows exactly how to win at York

Binhareer (2:55 – Handicap) – Double Helping of Haggas

This is the six-furlong sprint handicap, and I’m backing a quickfire double for Haggas and Marquand. Binhareer, who won an ultra-competitive course and distance handicap last October, looks like progressing to Group company and has enough pace around him to give him a nice slingshot into the final 300 yards or so.

Pocklington and Tuco Salamanca are no mugs, but both have shown their best form on the all-weather, while others are a little more exposed at the weights than my selection.

Why I’m Backing Binhareer:

  • List Icon

Ready for the step up to pattern company soon

  • List Icon

Already proven over this track and trip

  • List Icon

Well handicapped and will love Wednesday’s conditions

Time For Sandals (3:30 – Minster Stakes) – Speedy Filly Has the Toe for This

This is a biggie – a six-furlong Group 2 with £165,000 attached in prize money. This race used to be called the Duke of York Stakes before that title was changed. The less said about that, the better, though I reckon the York hierarchy didn’t sweat too much over the name alteration to be fair.

The top few in this event are likely to head straight off to Royal Ascot afterwards and move up to Group 1 level. Time For Sandals, trained by Harry Eustace, has been there and done that in fact. As a young horse, she won the Commonwealth Cup at the royal meeting in 2025.

Eustace has booked Ryan Moore for this assignment which is a positive. After a pipe-opener during the Craven Meeting at HQ four weeks ago, Time For Sandals will be spot-on now and at the weights, could have too much for Kind Of Blue, Big Mojo, Aramram, American Affair, and Cool Hoof Luke, though this is competitive.

Why I’m Backing Time For Sandals:

  • List Icon

Race fit after a run at Newmarket in April

  • List Icon

Group 1 winner who is well off at the weights

  • List Icon

    Top jockey on board

The Oaks is calling for whoever wins the Musidora on Wednesday. Trainer John Gosden won this race in 2022 with Emily Upjohn who, but for a slip at the start, would have gone on to Oaks glory herself. In 2023, the trainer did the Musidora-Oaks double with Soul Sister, too.

Now, he and son Thady are responsible for Legacy Link and I’m making her my best bet of the day to carry on the team’s great run.

First foal out of a Galileo mare, she is regally bred – by Dubawi and from same family as Frakel . When she ran in the Fillies’ Mile last season, she was taken off her feet a little, but finished quicker than anything else in the race. Considering that the winner was favourite for the 1000 Guineas this year, the second and third were placed in it, and she really needs this trip, we can see what sort of profile she has.

She’s a genuine Oaks contender at this point, all reports from the gallops are positive, and I hope she does nothing to ruin her chance at Epsom. Spreadex are offering up to £60 in free bets for new players, so it could be wise to back her there.

Why I’m Backing Legacy Link:

  • List Icon

The class act in the race for a top training team

  • List Icon

Beautiful pedigree – bred for the big time

  • List Icon

Needs this extra distance on her return
