The whole dynamic of Ligue 1 transfers changed with the massive increase in Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG’s) purchasing power. In 2011, the club was bought by Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), instantly becoming by far the richest in France and amongst the wealthiest in the world.

Success in Ligue 1 has come easily, with eight titles in 10 seasons. PSG can afford to mop up the best French young talent like Kylian Mbappé and shop at the exclusive end of the market. Huge Ligue 1 transfers brought Neymar and Lionel Messi to the club, but the Champions League remains elusive.

However, for betting purposes, PSG’s money has led to many rumours about players joining the Parisian club. When a top global player becomes available, more often than not, PSG will be one of the favourites to sign him. So, let’s see what’s happening in the 2022 summer transfer window!

France Ligue 1 Transfers: Latest News & Summer Window Outlook

PSG are the defending champions in France, but the ethos remains to improve, and that is reflected in the summer window Ligue 1 transfers. The club are much like Manchester City in that there has been huge Middle East investment in players, now in pursuit of the Holy Grail.

City and PSG have never won the European Cup or Champions League; at least Liverpool are in the same ballpark in the Premier League in England. Monaco and Lille won Ligue 1 in PSG’s two blank season, but Lyon are now best placed to consistently take on PSG in Le Championnat.

Many deals are free transfers or for an undisclosed fee. However, here are the latest done deals in Ligue 1 transfers for 2022/23 and rumours at the end of July. There are still several weeks for buying and selling before the window closes, which could affect betting on Ligue 1 matches.

PSG Transfers

The champions enhanced their squad with two major signings before the 2022/23 season, buying Nuno Mendes from Sporting CP for £38.00m and Vitinha from Porto for $34.00m. Winning Ligue 1 is now expected, so the Champions League remains the main goal with PSG transfers.

The signing of the Portuguese players was offset by the departure of Alphonse Areola to West Ham United for £10.50m. PSG also sold Xavi Simons to PSV for an undisclosed fee, while Angel di Maria moved to Juventus on a free transfer.

Lyon Transfers

Lyon secured the services of Alexandre Lacazette, who signed on a free transfer from Arsenal, while Corentin Tolisso arrived under the same terms from Bayern Munich. Meanwhile, Titouan Thomas left for Estoril Praiha with yet another undisclosed free. After so little Ligue 1 transfer activity in the first weeks of the summer window, we can expect more later on in the season.

Other Ligue 1 Transfers

The biggest Ligue 1 transfer for 2022/23 saw Aurelien Tchouameni move from Monaco to Real Madrid for £68.00m (€80.00m). In addition to buying Areloa from PSG, West Ham United spent £30.00m to bring Nayef Aguerd from Rennes to London.

Sven Botman exchanged Lille for Newcastle United in a deal that cost the Premier League club over £31.00m. Takumi Minamino moved in the other direction as Monaco bought him from Liverpool for £15.00m. Additionally, almost £13.00m was exchanged when Mohamed Ali-Cho left Angers for Real Sociedad.

The 10 Biggest Ligue 1 Transfers – 2021/22 and Summer 2022

We'll now display the 10 biggest recent Ligue 1 transfers based on market value. The list includes deals during the 2021/22 season and the 2022 summer transfer window, illustrating perfectly the financial strength of PSG as the club accounts for all but two of the deals. Having said that, PSG was not the most profitable French team to bet on in 2021/21, with that being Nice instead.

The ranking was correct as of July 24, 2022, but there may be transfers involving players with a higher market value before the end of the 2022 summer window. There are a number of players with uncertain futures who could be potential targets for PSG.

Tips for Betting on France Ligue 1 Transfers

You never know when Paris Saint-Germain will swoop down and sign up one of the hottest footballing prospects. When speaking about clubs with huge budgets, the amount of rumours around is just as high, so betting on transfers might prove to be a tricky job.

On the other hand, most of the Ligue 1 clubs do not have such a large budget to spend, and thus, normally have more realistic and attainable targets. Similarly, with smaller clubs, the rumours are more limited and normally slightly closer to the truth.

We've put together a few points we suggest you keep in mind when betting on player or manager transfers:

  • 1) Use Reliable Sources

In the world of social media, there will be many rumours being spread - some well-founded, others not. Some fan pages even start rumours just to get their favourite club to consider a particular player, but this does not necessarily mean the club can or will pursue the transfer.

Basing bets on rumours is a very risky business, so we suggest only trusting reliable sources or journalists - such as Fabrizio Romano - who are focused on transfers or who have sources close to the club in question.

  • 2) Stay Up To Date

Transfer news changes quickly. Agents may have contacted many different clubs while trying to find their player a new club, and sometimes, even if they are close to joining one, interest from a preferred club may override everything in a matter of hours, if not minutes.

Naturally, the best betting sites will also try to keep their odds as relevant and competitive as possible and will change them frequently too. If you get word of reliable news and notice that the bookies have not reacted yet, then you have found yourself a window of opportunity.

Before deciding, make sure to check for the latest news, as basing your decisions on outdated information may easily result in lost bets.

  • 3) Compare Odds

Betting sites are in constant competition, often offering attractive promotions or enhanced odds to keep their customers happy. Before placing a bet, we suggest looking at what odds other betting sites are offering.

The odds on different sites could vary for a number of reasons - perhaps they decided to offer more value, maybe they're late to react to certain news, or they have an ongoing offer. Double-checking the odds you've found might mean you'll find better prices elsewhere.

Transfer Betting in Other European Leagues

Bundesliga

Bayern Munich did not make any purchases in the Bundesliga transfer market in the summer 2022 window. However, they bought in Sadio Mane from Liverpool, as well as Ryan Gravenburch and Noussair Mazraiou, both from Ajax. Robert Lewandowski moved to Barcelona.

Borussia Dortmund sold Erling Haaland to Manchester City and bought four players from other Bundesliga clubs, including Nico Schlotterbeck from SC Freiburg. RB Leipzig’s most significant arrival was Xaver Schlager from Wolfsburg.

La Liga

Barcelona did not have any deals impacting betting on La Liga transfers. All their business involved players from other leagues, notably Robert Lewandowskis agreement to move from Bayern Munich. Barca paid Leeds United £55.00m to bring Raphinha to Spain, their biggest outlay.

Real Madrid made the most expensive purchase of £68.00m to bring Aurelien Tchouameni from Monaco. The club also released Gareth Bale, Isco and Marcelo. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid did no buying or selling with other La Liga clubs.

Premier League

Arsenal bought Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City for £85.50m in total. Raheem Sterling also left the Etihad, joining Chelsea for £47.30m in the summer Premier League transfers. Kalvin Philips moved from Leeds United to City in another expensive deal.

An intriguing deal was Christian Eriksen joining Manchester United from Brentford on a free transfer. Lisandro Martinez also arrives at United from Ajax for £51.60m.

Liverpool paid Benfica £86.00m for Darwin Nunez, while Erling Haaland cost City £51.30m to bring him from Borussia Dortmund. Everton picked up £60.00m when Richarlison moved to Tottenham.

Serie A

Most transfers in Serie A are for undisclosed fees, free transfers or loan deals. However, we do know that Atalanta paid about £18m to bring Ederson from Salernitana. Jeremie Boga also arrived at the club from Sassuolo, and Merih Deniral came in from Juventus in big money deals.

Romelu Lukaku returns to Inter Milan with a loan deal from Chelsea. Paul Pogba also returns to his old Serie A club, Juventus, from Manchester United. Giorgio Chiellini is rewarded for his service with Juve, with a free transfer to Los Angeles FC in MLS.

ThePuntersPage Final Say

Betting on France Ligue 1 transfers is far from simple. More often than not, the markets available are only focused on one team – that being PSG, and it's difficult to find a market for transfers by other French clubs unless they involve a world-class player.

Nevertheless, betting on the transfer market is one way of spicing up the season when the transfer windows are closed, and can be very profitable if you do get it right.
