Popular US Open Betting Markets

Many people love to bet on Tennis with their bookmakers because it is a straight forward contest in which draws are a non-possibility. The ruling out of ties means that the game needs to find a winner and can have only two outcomes, making it more of a thrilling concept to some.

Outright Winner

There is nothing much more to this than simply a bet on who you think will win the men’s or women’s tournament in your US Open tennis predictions. Of course, you back your prediction up with a little money and if your selection wins, then you will make a profit according to the odds assigned to your pick.

Match Betting

Match betting is essentially a two way marketplace in which bettors can place a wager on the outcome of an individual match in a tournament, in this case the US Open.

Set Betting

Set betting is where punters bet on the final set score of a tennis match. You might think the favourite, who might well be short priced, is unlikely to drop a set and set and win 3-0 but others might fancy the underdog to win a one or two sets but still lose. Betting on the final set score is like betting on the score of a football match. If you think it might be 3-1, then back that score line.

Total Games Over/Under

To wager on an Over/Under bet in Tennis is to bet on the total number of games played in a match. The closer in ability the two players contesting the match on which you are betting means that, in theory at least, both players will win a lot of games so the match could go all the way to the wire and post a high game score, making Over a sensible bet. If there is an ability gulf between the two then maybe Under is the appropriate bet.

Tournament Structure for the Tennis US Open

Played on the on outdoor hard courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens NYC, the US Open is a seeded knockout event lasting eight rounds. For the men’s tournament, matches are the best of five sets whereas the women’s and doubles equivalent is played to the best of three. The women’s final is played on the final Saturday of the competition and is contested by the last two competitors in the tournament, while the men’s final is played on the Sunday.

History of Tennis US Open

The tournament was first held in August 1881 on grass courts at the Newport Casino in Newport, Rhode Island. Back then it was known as the U.S. National Championship and, although it has morphed into the US Open today, the tournament is one of the oldest tennis championships in the world. Also, back then, only men’s clubs that were members of the United States National Lawn Tennis Association were eligible for participation. Richard Sears was the winner of the first ever event. In total, Sears would go on to win seven consecutive singles titles.

In 1968, the Open era began when professional tennis players were allowed to compete and two years later the US Open became the first Grand Slam tournament to use a tiebreaker to decide a set that reached a 6–6 score in games, a feature that is commonplace today. In 1978 the tournament was held in Flushing Meadows, Queens for the first time. At the same time, the tournament's surface was switched from clay to hard which remains in place today.
