The Select Stakes is a unique Group 1 greyhound race held at Nottingham Greyhound Stadium and is currently run over 500 metres annually in late July.

One of the things that makes this event unique is that the competing hounds are all chosen by the panel. From 1952 until 1996, the race took place at London’s Wembley Stadium until dog racing at Wembley ended after which the event moved to Nottingham.

The Select Stakes is one of the most prestigious greyhound races in the UK and has a unique qualifying format. The six dogs that participate each year have each been selected by a panel of dog racing journalists who are all members of the Greyhound Writing Association. Since 1997, the race has taken place at the iconic Nottingham Greyhound Stadium and is run over a distance of 500 metres each year in late July.

The Greyhound Board Of Great Britain has announced that, because of the international COVID-19 outbreak, all greyhound racing in the UK has been suspended until June 01, 2020, when there are tentative plans for the racing of dogs to restart behind closed doors. Because the Select Stakes greyhound race is scheduled for late July, there is every reason to believe that this race will be unaffected and will run as planned. At present, there are no ante-post prices available, however we will display them here as soon as they are.

Greyhound betting is one of the lifebloods of British betting. There are races all day, every day, morning, afternoon and evening. However, because races are usually over in less than a minute, greyhound racing does not supply an overly abundant amount of betting markets as other sports might. However, what greyhound racing lacks in bet variety is more than made up for in thrilling excitement.

To Win Betting

Put simply, placing a bet to win on the dogs means that the punter involved has put down a bet on greyhound to win a nominated race. No extra information is required – just the name or trap number of the dog you want to win, the race’s name or time, odds or starting price (SP) and the stake with which the bettor wishes to play with. In order for your bet to get paid out as a winner, your pick must be the first greyhound to pass the finish post. Given that the length of greyhound races are generally pretty short – in the case of the Select Stakes 500 metres and four bends – many greyhound races go to a photo finish which can often lead to a deadheat result. If this happens in this race, and it did in 2013, remember that the track stewards’ decision is final.

Forecast Betting

The purpose of a forecast bet is for bettors to select two greyhounds to finish first and second in a nominated order. This is done by entering the two dogs that you believe will finish in the top two by using the forecast tab in the greyhounds section of your favourite online bookmakers. So long as those two dogs come first and second as you predicted, you will receive a winner’s payout. Anything else will be deemed a losing bet.

Tricast Betting

A Tricast bet works in exactly the same way as a forecast, but extends your picks to the first three dogs to make it home in a race. As mentioned above, this isn’t merely a case of selecting three dogs to come 1st, 2nd and 3rd – you must also get the order entirely correct to win. Because of the extra selections, tricast bets typically pay better than forecast bets.

Each Way Tricast Betting

In the above straight tricast bet, you need to not only pick the first three dogs to cross the line in a race but also the order too. Combination tricasts or each way tricasts allow you play around with the order. By using an each way tricast, those same three dogs can cross the line in any order whatsoever. Naturally, this bet costs 6 times more than a straight tricast because the permutations are greater – by 6, in fact.

The Select Stakes race was first held in 1952 at a distance of 525 yards at Wembley stadium, and stayed at that distance until 1974. Although the race remained at Wembley, the race was extended to 490 metres from 1975 onwards until 1996, when the original Wembley Stadium closed for dog racing, thereby allowing it to host that year’s UEFA European Championships (the Euro 96). Looking for a new home, the race organisers settled on the prestigious Nottingham Dog Track Stadium, where the race remains to this day. Throughout its entire life at Nottingham, the race has been run over 500 metres.

Due to the race’s extreme popularity, another premier race was created purely in 2006 to accompany the event. That race was the invitational event known as the Select Stayers Race and is run over 730 metres, designed for the best greyhounds over long distances.

In 2013, Holdem Spy and Daddy Knows Best finished in a dead-heat and were both declared winners – the first and only time this happened in a greyhound derby.

The race goes off over a distance of 500 metres.

The winner of the Select Stakes Greyhound Race will receive £7,500.

A dead heat payout is calculated by splitting the stake equally between the number of winners in the race. So if two winners cannot be separated, the payout will be split in two.

Yes, betting operators will usually open ante post books well in advance of the race starting.

The Select Stakes greyhound race is one of the elite sprints of the British greyhound racing year. The competitor list is drawn up by writing members of the Greyhound Writing Association, ensuring only the best four-bend performing dogs run. Because of this, this Group One race has established a long and esteemed list of winners.

There are a few races that run earlier in the calendar where we can look for a few pointers. Around two months earlier, the Greyhound Derby also takes place at Nottingham on the very same track, while The Scottish Greyhound Derby in Glasgow runs in between both Nottingham events and can also provide potential form clues for this race.
