Cheltenham November Meeting Betting Tips & Predictions 2021

  • One of the crown jewels of the UK’s pre-Christmas national hunt schedule, Cheltenham’s November meeting makes its return this Friday. Over the three days of the festival, there are eight Graded races to enjoy, the most prestigious of which is Saturday’s Paddy Power Gold Cup. With a prize pool worth £160,000 the race attracts some of the best handicap chasers in the game. Many of these will be getting their first run out of the new jump season and will have had their eye on this event all summer. The race, and meeting in general, should also offer us some pointers on what we can expect at this course for the national hunt season and also the big festival here in March.
  • At the time of writing, Protektorat and Lalor head the betting as co favourites. Protekorat goes for Dan Skelton who also enters last year's runner-up Spiritofthegames, while his former boss Paul Nicholls’ hopes rest on Lalor and Simply The Betts who both joined his yard recently. Evan Williams returns the 2020 winner Coole Cody, who is slightly less favoured than Midnight Shadow, Caribean Boy and Al Dancer, the last of whom is running for trainer Sam Thomas.
  • After twice pulling up for Kayley Woollacott at the back end of last season, Lalor has made the switch to Paul Nicholls’ yard. The Arkle Trophy Trial Novices’ Chase winner from this meet in 2018 has not won since then. However, the move to the Ditcheat stables, a wind operation and the new training regime could see him rejuvenised.
  • Paul Nicholls’s other new recruit, Simply The Betts, is another who hasn’t come on as first hoped. Two years back he won at the Cheltenham Festival when he came home first in the Brown Advisory and Merriebelle Stable Plate Handicap Chase and looked for all the world like developing into a horse that would be at home in Group company as a swiftly improving chaser. He has had just the one run out since then, coming in at sixth behind Coole Cody on this very track.
  • There have only ever been two back-to-back winners of the race - Half Free and Bradbury Star - since 1960 when the Gold Cup was first run. On the face of it, that doesn’t bode well for Coole Cody, but he isn’t to be ruled out. After all, he is just four pounds higher here than he was when he beat Spiritofthegames and Al Dancer in this race last year. He was also in good shape running here last time out when he came home second to Guard Your Dreams.

Popular Cheltenham November Meeting Betting Markets

This event is a three-day meet with at least six races taking place each day, making for numerous and great betting opportunities to enjoy. Below are a few of the most popular markets that you should consider placing a bet on.

Race Winner Betting

To back a horse to win in a race, simply click on the name of your chosen horse to enter it on to your betting slip. Back your prediction with a stake you are comfortable with, and place your bet. For this bet to win, your horse needs to be first past the post. If you prefer, you can make the bet each-way by doubling your stake and backing the horse to finish among the places too. If the horse wins, you get paid on both parts of the bet; if it doesn't, but still finishes among the places, then you still get paid for the place.

Forecast Betting

With a forecast bet, punters are required to pick the two horses that they believe will finish first and second in a race. For the bet to pay out as a winner, the two selected runners must finish in the exact order that the bettor has entered on to the betting slip. If you prefer, you can double the stake and place a reverse forecast, which means that the same two horses can come home first and second – but in any order. Remember, at some online bookmakers, a minimum £1 bet is all it takes to unlock live streaming of the race you are betting on, so you can even watch the action in real time if you like.

Top Jockey Betting

The Jockey Club will crown a Top Jockey for the best performing rider at the meet. If, after looking at the rides for the three days, you believe that you know which jockey is likely to outperform all others, then this is a bet worth considering. For instance, in 2019, Charlie Deutsch won the award for the leading jockey in that year.

Daily Placepots Betting

Placepots are fun bets that, ideally, last for an entire day’s racing. Placing a Placepot bet is a simple case of looking at a single day’s race card (see below) and picking a horse, or horses, to place in each of the day’s races. With any luck, your bet will carry on through the day until the sixth race, when it will pay out according to an amount announced by the Tote, the UK’s national bookmaker, which is applicable to the pound.

History of the Cheltenham November Meeting

This racing event came to be in the year 2000, when the Jockey Club had the bright idea of bringing together a collection of races that were already being run at Cheltenham and grouping them together in a three-day meet. This meeting was designed to kick off the National Hunt season, just as the Cheltenham Festival traditionally closes the jump season.

Back when it started, the meeting was officially called the Cheltenham Open, and was far from an instant success. As the years went by, races of higher and higher quality were added to the schedule until eventually, the Cheltenham Open became the second biggest event on Cheltenham’s calendar.

Today, this is one of the most exciting meetings of the entire year. The change in name, which came about in 2017, occurred because event organisers, the Jockey Club, felt that the name clashed with the Open Golf Championship, even though that event is held in July each year. In 2020, the event was held without spectators in the venue due to the pandemic.
