DP World Tour Championship 2020 Odds, Tips & Predictions

Patrick Reed leads the betting as we head into the Race to Dubai finale at the DP World Tour Championship. The world number 11 arrives in the Gulf in form and off the back of five consecutive top 15 finishes. Reed also has the benefit of a previous deep run at this event, finishing joint second in 2018. If Reed’s best price of 9/1 is too short for you then you might want to look further down the field. The American does, after all, have plenty of competition.

We like the look of Christiaan Bezuidenhout, one of the brightest performers on the European Tour and who recently collected not one but two titles back in his South African homeland. No player has ever won three back to back to back titles on the European Tour but there is absolutely no reason why Bezuidenhout couldn’t be the first. His best finish here was 12th last year but his extremely good performances this year suggest a better place finish is imminent.

Reigning US PGA winner Collin Morikawa and former champion Tommy Fleetwood will also be in town and their claims cannot be ignored, nor those of Matt Wallace and twice Order of Merit winner Lee Westwood. Wallace in particular finished joint second in the DP World Tour Championship two years ago and, despite last week providing evidence to the contrary, usually performs well in Dubai. At 25/1, Wallace is a huge price.

Finally, Tyrrell Hatton is another who has a great record in Dubai as proved by a string of three finishes over there in recent years. The American has also joint finished second in this event back in 2016 so has what it takes to take down this tourney.

Popular DP World Tour Championship Betting Markets

The DP World Tour Championship is European Tour Golf’s richest event and is also the culmination of the Race to Dubai. As such, there is always plenty to bet on. As ever with a golf tournament, there are many markets that are ripe for golf betting so the biggest problem you will have is deciding what to bet on next.

Outright Tournament Winner Betting

With an outright tournament winner’s bet, what you are aiming to do is successfully predict the player that will win the tournament. These bets can be placed well in advance of the competition and, because golf tourneys always have a large number of entrants – the DP World Tour Championship has 50 for example – the ante post odds are usually pretty tempting even on the favourites. Of course, you always bet while the tournament is underway and even bet live and in-play if someone looks to be building a lead and you want to nab those real time odds before they drop.

Best betting site for outright tournament betting: William Hill

Two Ball Betting

With two ball betting, the golfers are paired up into couples and punters need to bet on which player will shoot the better score during that day’s round of 18 holes. While this might seem a fairly easy betting market to master, remember that these two players will have been matched on ability and be of similar skill levels. Also, conditions can have an impact on performances on any golfer and the DP World Tour Championship is set in the desert. November in Dubai has an average high of 31c which is still extremely hot. This bet can be placed as each way and some bookmakers will offer each way specials where they pay out on more than the regular number of places.

Best betting site for two ball betting: Ladbrokes

Day One Leaderboard Betting

Regardless of what happens on any other day of the DP World Tour Championship, so long as you have bet on the player that tops the leaderboard after day one only, then you have a winning bet on your hands. It can be a concern watching the events play out on the course if your pick suddenly loses form and starts putting bogeys rather than birdies. While you can choose to cash out in such a case, the beauty of this bet is that it focuses on just the one single day. It can also be backed each way.

Best betting site for day one leaderboard topper betting: Betfair

Winner’s Nationality Betting

It could be that there are a number of players from one nation in particular that you like the look of or maybe you bet with your patriotic heart. In such cases, there is always the option that you can bet on the nationality of the winning player. That means that anyone from your chosen nation can win the DP World Tour Championship for you to make a return on investment.

Best betting site for winner’s nationality betting: BetVictor

Tournament Structure for the DP World Tour Championship

Taking place on the Earth Course at the Jumeirah Golf Estate in the United Arab Emirate of Dubai each November, the DP World Tour Championship, like all good golf tournaments, always begins on a Thursday and culminates on the following Sunday. During those four days of stroke play competition, 50 golfers from the European Tour and, more specifically, the Race to Dubai, will play a round of 18 holes per day.

The best performing players during the first two days of play will progress on to days three and four, while the weaker performing players will not make the cut and go home. By the end of play Sunday, the golfer with the highest below par score will be crowned the winner. The DP World Tour Championship carries with it a $8 million prize fund. There is also a $5 million bonus pool. The winner of the DP World Tour Championship picks up the biggest first prize in tournament golf of $3 million. Should they happen to top the Race to Dubai scoreboard also, they – or whoever does – will receive a $3 million bonus.

What is the Race to Dubai?

The Race to Dubai replaced the European Tour’s Order of Merit in 2009. The new title was a direct reference to the DP World Tour Championship, which takes place in Dubai, being the final event of the year and is reserved for the top 50 finishers on the leaderboard, after the finish of the Hong Kong Open. The highest five finishers on the leaderboard after the DP World Tour Championship get to share $5 million, with the winner collecting $3 million of that fund. The Race To Dubai winner also picks up a 10 year European Tour exemption.

History of the DP World Tour Championship

The DP World Tour Championship began life in 2009 when the Race To Dubai was introduced by the European Tour to replace the Order of Merit. The DP World Tour Championship itself was brought in to replace the Volvo Masters and pits the top 50 placed golfers on the Race to Dubai leaderboard against each other.

Since 2017, the DP World Tour Championship has been part of the Rolex Series. The Rolex Series is a collection of eight tournaments that offer at least $7 million and boosted Race to Dubai points. It was established to replace the Final Series which had been in operation since 2013 and consisted only of four tournaments. Today, the tournaments that make up the Rolex Series are the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open, BMW PGA Championship, Nedbank Golf Challenge Hosted by Gary Player, Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, Italian Open, Turkish Airlines Open and, of course, the final event of the series, the DP World Tour Championship.
