WGC Dell Technologies Match Play Betting Tips & Predictions 2021

It’s now the week of WGC Dell Technologies Match Play 2021, a tournament that was one of the first cancelled events of 2020. This is also when the PGA makes its first visit of the season to Texas with this latest stop off at the Austin Country Club.

We now know the tee times for the seeded matchups which we have listed below. Already we can see that there are some mouth-watering ties and great matches to look out for. Tee off times will be going off every 11 minutes and there are 32 matches we can bet on for the first round.

As for the main event, there are 64 in the hunt of the outright win in Austin, but Brooks Koepka will not be among them due to having surgery on his knee. This makes him the highest ranking absentee. Ante post bettors be ware, he is also now a major doubt for this year’s US Masters.

Justin Thomas will be teeing off though and has the shortest price of all of the participants. He is in fine form too and having a great 2021. Big hitting world number five, Bryson DeChambeau is also in really good shape right now and would make an interesting selection in one-on-one games, especially given the nature of the south course where there a number of short par fours.

Spain’s Jon Rahm was a runner up here is 2017 and is mind-blowingly good when he is in the mood. For my money, he is not doing enough in the game right now considering his enormous talent and hasn’t banked a tournament win since he took down the BMW Championship back in August. Back then he beat Dustin Johnson into second place as the duo switched finishing positions from this event in 2017 when Johnson triumphed. You wouldn’t back against either of the two delivering this time around.

Collin Morikawa will be making his WGC Match Play debut this week, so it will be interesting to see how he fares. At least he has a favourable draw being grouped in with Max Homa, J.T. Poston and Billy Horschel against whom he opens up. Englishman Paul Casey has placed in the top 12 in every tourney he has played in so far this year and banked a winner in Dubai. Casey also has two runner up performances in the bag in this Match Play too, although admittedly not at the Austin Country Club.

Group 8 looks interesting for European eyes, especially in a Ryder Cup year, as 2017 US Masters winner Sergio Garcia, Matt Wallace, Tyrell Hutton and Lee Westwood all face off against each other. Westwood, in particular, is going great guns this year and can backed for as much as 55/1 in some places.

Popular WGC Dell Technologies Match Play Betting Markets

Golf can rightly be considered to be one of the best sports for betting. The game just effortlessly lends itself to betting due to the large competitors and long prices. Unlike most other sports there are no odds on favourites in golf and the huge fields of competitors mean that there are more market types in golf betting than with other games and because of all the variables that can affect play, you can never be sure how an event, any event, will play out which can make for some very tasty WGC match play payouts.

Each Way Betting

Traditionally, each way betting in golf has paid out on third or fourth place finishes. However, in the modern internet era of online and mobile betting, an oversaturated marketplace has emerged in which bookmakers are in competition with each other. As such, an ever increasing amount of offers are in play when the big golf tournaments come around, and one such regular promotion is for bookies to pay out on any stated number of places. So, when you put down your each way stake – half win, half place – you will get some money back even if your player doesn’t win, but finishes within your bookie’s designated places. Also, some bookmakers will offer ¼ the odds for a place, while others might offer.

PGA TOUR Player of the Year Or Winner of the Jack Nicklaus Award Betting

At the start of the season, or while it is ongoing, bettors can predict the winner of the Jack Nicklaus Trophy – better known as the PGA Tour Player of the Year. This award was first given out in 1990 by the PGA Tour, and is awarded based on the outcome of a ballot undertaken by the players on the tour. While you can bet on this award during the season, it will grow more and more obvious as to who the recipient will be with each passing tournament. Naturally, this will deplete the odds. Far better, then, to make such a prediction at the start of the season, when no one knows quite what to expect.

WGC Dell Technologies Match Play Group Betting

Group betting, which you won’t find in all golf tournaments, is designed to allow punters to bet on a group of players in a match play event. Similar to a ministroke play tournament, group betting pits a small group against each other, and the winner is the player who has the lowest score among them. In some grouped match play tournaments, the ability level can be heavily in favour of a high ranking professional. Because of this, the odds here can be lower on the favourite than would be the case for an outright win, unless, of course, a bookmaker is offering special enhanced odds promotions for certain group bets.

WGC Dell Technologies Match Play Top Finish Bets

Much like betting on each way places, top finish bets allow you to bet on a player to finish in a pre-determined number of places, from top 5, top 10 or top 20 at the end of 18 holes, 36 holes or the whole tournament. All of these differing top finish bets are available and will vary depending on your bookmaker, event and field size.

Tournament Structure for the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play

The WGC Dell match play format is a match play tournament that takes place annually in Austin, Texas. It is unique in golf because it is the only WGC tourney that is played using the match play scoring system.

Considered by many to be golf's least predictable tournament, the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play has been hosted at the Austin Country Club since 2016. Prior to moving to Texas, it had been hosted in Arizona eight times, California eight times and Australia on one separate occasion in 2001. It is an event organised by the International Federation of PGA Tours and the prize money is recuperated from the PGA Tour, the European Tour and the Japan Golf Tour. The winner of the WGC Match Play receives a Wedgwood trophy named the Walter Hagan Cup.

It is an individual match-play event with a round-robin group phase. As of 2016, it has been played as a 64-player event, starting with 16 groups of four, the winners of which will advance into a 16 player, single elimination, tournament to determine a winner. Each group will contain at least one high ranked professional, and the tournament takes place from Wednesday through Friday.

In these 16 groups of four, round-robin play continues for the first three days, with each player getting an 18-hole match against each player in their group. Draws are possible and, in some cases, likely in these 18-hole matches which can also be won or lost by each of the players. If a player wins a match, they get a point; if they lose the match, they don't. If they tie or halve the match, they and their opponent each get a half-point, like in The Ryder Cup. On the Friday of the tournament, the final day of the round-robin phase takes place, which will determine each group’s winner. If players are tied for the lead in a group after round robin play, a sudden-death playoff will take place on the first hole. The winners of each group then advance into a knockout one-versus-one competition on Saturday with 18-hole matches in the following structure:

  • Group 1 winner vs. Group 16 winner
  • Group 8 winner vs. Group 9 winner
  • Group 4 winner vs. Group 13 winner
  • Group 5 winner vs. Group 12 winner
  • Group 6 winner vs. Group 11 winner
  • Group 3 winner vs. Group 14 winner
  • Group 7 winner vs. Group 10 winner
  • Group 2 winner vs. Group 15 winner

From here, the winners of each match play in the semi-final, the third-place playoff and the final on Sunday in the afternoon in 18-hole rounds, where a champion will be crowned.

History of the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play

The inaugural staging of this WGC event was at the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad in California, back in 1999. The tournament remained on the US west coast until 2006 before relocating to Arizona in 2007, where it made its home until 2014. There was an exception in 2001 when it was, for one year only, held at the Metropolitan Golf Club in Victoria, Australia. In 2016, when it also changed format, it upped and moved to its current home in Austin, TX and the Austin Country Club. Until 2015, this event was a singles knockout competition, but in 2016 the WGCDell Technologies Match Play format changed to a round-robin first round, followed by single matches tournament. The 2020 WGC Dell Technologies Match Play was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, meaning that the WGC Dell match play 2020 players and universal golf fans missed out on this annual event.

ThePuntersPage Final Say

Match play events are always welcome in the golfing calendar, as they offer something alternative to the more common stroke play events that account for more than 90% of the years golfing schedule. They also bring a different perspective to betting, requiring a different approach. In some cases, this could mean single matchups, but in the case of the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play, it means groups of four before we get to the singles round. While the manner of the groups does offer a degree of comfort for the top-ranked and seeded player, this event remains golf's least predictable competition, and also one of its most enjoyable.
