Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship Betting Tips & Predictions 2022

  • The European Tour heads over to the Middle East for the start of a mini swing, and the Abu Dhabi Championship will boast a star-studded field. Rory McIlroy has an affinity with playing in the Middle East, and he was a two-time winner at the Dubai Desert Classic in 2009 and 2015. The Ulsterman has been working hard tweaking his game during the offseason, and although he’s failed in 11 previous attempts to get his hands on the Abu Dhabi Championship, he is hitting with more aplomb. He seems to have rediscovered his confidence at just the right time, so it won’t be a surprise to see him in contention come Sunday.
  • Meanwhile, world No.2 Collin Morikawa travelled to Abu Dhabi firmly clutching the Claret Jug after he lifted the Open last year at Royal St George’s. The American has enjoyed a meteoric rise, and he is always a threat wherever he plays. The Yas Island course requires tight iron play, especially with a tough trio of signatures holes on 16, 17, and 18. And Morikawa – who is an excellent iron player - is valued at 7/1, so he looks good value in the outright market.
  • Tyrrell Hatton – meanwhile – is the defending champion after he stormed to a four-shot victory last year. And while he makes for compelling viewing, the Englishman could struggle to retain his title judging by the quality of the field. Although his credentials are unquestioned, the 30-year-old – who has six European Tour wins to his name – could well finish in the top 10. Tommy Fleetwood will naturally be itching to get back in the winners’ circle, and he is priced at 22/1 to do so.

Popular Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship Betting Markets

While horse racing and football take more money in UK wagers, golf is the ultimate sport for betting because it offers variety and value in abundance. Just take a look at the following options.

Outright Winner Betting

Outright tournament betting on the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship is no different to betting on any other golf tournament. You simply pick the player from the field of competitors that, in your opinion, is the most likely to win the whole competition. The odds on the favourite players will obviously be lower than they will on less fancied golfers but even then, because of the huge field size, you are still very likely to get good value on the favourites.

Top Leaderboard After Day One Betting

This bet is a good one because it is only concerned with one day of play. Naturally then, bettors are four times more likely to pick a winner of this bet than an outright winner because, to win an outright bet, selected players must keep their form up for each of the four days play. In this case, however, your pick only needs to play well and top the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship leaderboard for the first day. After that, who cares?

Six Shooter Betting

Six shooter betting in golf is where the online bookmaker selects six competing golfers to go, for the purposes of this bet alone, into battle. Technically, they are not in competition with regards to the wider tourney, and their collective is purely for the purposes of this wager. While essentially the same type of bet as two or three balls betting, the difference is that here the players involved in the bet are not actually matched in the real competition. If the player you back posts the best score out of all of the six he has been pitted against, your bet is a winner.

Top Nationality Betting

This is a bet that tasks you with selecting the nation from which the eventual winner will call home. For the main part, a PGA Tour event will feature an overly American crowd but, of course, that doesn’t mean that it will be an American that will win. This being a European Tour event means that there is a better chance of another nationality winning the title. Either way, the idea is simple. All you need to do is pick the country that the eventual winner comes from.

Tournament Structure for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship

The Abu Dhabi Golf Championship is held each January on Yas Island. The event is both part of the European Tour and the Rolex Series, the European equivalent of the PGA’s FedEX. Being part of the Rolex Series means that the tourney has an elevated prize fund of around $8 million. This prize fund naturally draws in a big field filled with the biggest names in golf.

The course here is very much about water features, no fewer than nine holes from the 6,700 yard tees have water hazards as a part of their makeup. The fairways are not too rough either, because the trees are set well back. The 12th hole, which is par three, is flanked by bunkers and shot over the water, while the par five 18th plays towards a clubhouse that is spectacularly shaped like a falcon with outstretched wings.

The Abu Dhabi Golf Championship is a stroke play event. This means that, between day one on Thursday and day four on Sunday, players play a full round of 18 holes four times. Over these days, the players build up an aggregate score of strokes. The players need to build the highest below par score they possibly can in order to top the table by the end of the day Sunday. If players remain tied, the tournament will trigger a three hole playoff in order to separate them and find a winner.

The Rolex Series

The Rolex Series is a series of eight tournaments which pay a minimum of $7 million as well as awarding an increased amount of Race to Dubai points. The series was created in 2017 with the express intention of attracting the best in the world. Each of the eight Rolex events offers a prize fund that is around two or three times the amount of regular European Tour prize pools. The series begins in January with the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and finishes in November with the DP World Tour Championship.

Rolex Series Schedule:

  • January: Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Abu Dhabi GC. ($8,000,000)
  • July: Irish Open, Lahinch GC. ($7,000,000)
  • July: Scottish Open, The Renaissance Club. ($7,000,000)
  • September: BMW PGA Championship, Wentworth Country Club. ($7,000,000)
  • October: Italian Open, Olgiata Country Club. ($7,000,000)
  • November: Turkish Airlines Open, TBC. ($7,000,000)
  • November: Nedbank Golf Challenge, Gary Player Country Club. ($7,000,000)
  • November: DP World Tour Championship, Jumeirah GE. ($8,000,000)

History of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship

The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship was first held in 2006 and, at the time, was one of three Arabian Gulf States tournaments on the European Tour. The tourney is, in part, organised by the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority Visit Abu Dhabi.

After five years, HSBC jumped on board as the main sponsor of the tournament. Until then, the prize fund had been around $2 million, but the involvement of the bank allowed the prize fund to rise to $3 million. In 2019, the event, now one of six annually held in the UAE, was included as part of the European Tour’s Rolex Series which created another boost for the prize fund which today stands at $8 million.

The 2021 Abu Dhabi Championship took place as normal and was unaffected by the coronavirus. However, organisers have named a new host venue for the 2022 renewal, after the tournament was moved to Yas Island for the first time when Yas Links Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates hosted the European Tour’s opening Rolex Series event of 2022.
