When is the AT&T Byron Nelson 2020 Taking Place?

Due to the international outbreak of the global pandemic in 2020, the PGA took the unprecedented step of cancelling or postponing several flagship tournaments on their tour in an effort to help slow down the spread of the virus and protect the health of the athletes, officials, spectators and volunteers.

Unfortunately, the AT&T Byron Nelson, which should have been held in May, was one of the cancelled events. 2020 was to have been the last year that the tournament would have been held at the Trinity Forest Golf Club before relocating to the TPC Craig Ranch for at least five of the following years.

Popular Bets for the AT&T Byron Nelson

Few sports are as popular with bettors the world over as golf. This is because of the value it provides on even its shortest priced favourites. It is also because of the huge fields of players that tee off each week. These large numbers of competitors mean that we get bet types in golf that other sports are unable to create a market for.

Golf Tournament Winner Betting

This is unquestionably the most popular betting market in golf, and the reason for that is because it is a straight up single bet on which golfer will be crowned the champion. It is a straightforward bet on which player you are backing to win the tournament outright. So long as your selection does indeed go on to win, you will scoop a profit on top of your returned stake.

Golf Each Way Betting

With most bets, there is the opportunity to certify your wager by making it each way. For instance, for double the stake money, an each way bet is one part outright win and one part place finish bet. Plus, with the odds in golf always being so generous, even a 1/4 of the odds will make for a nice return so long as your player comes in whatever amount of places your bookmaker is paying to. Note: these will vary from bookie to bookie as the tourney approaches and each bookie is jostling for your attention and your money. Plus, if things still look like faltering, you always have the option of cashing out.

Top Nationality Betting

Another idea is to bet on the top nationality market. This bet is where you are picking a name to be the best performing player from a selected nationality. So long as your nominated Englishman, Italian, Spaniard, Australian or whatever out plays his fellow countrymen, you’ll be quids in. However, it's worth remembering that American competitors will vastly outweigh players from overseas and their odds will alter accordingly.

Hole-in-One Betting

Finally, we have the golf specific prop bet that is the hole-in-one bet. This is simply betting on whether or not a player, any player, will land a hole-in-one on any one of the days’ play. There isn’t really a strategy required to win this bet as most bettors know such a bet is a bit of a freak and so unlikely to pay off. It is, however, a fun side bet.

Tournament Structure for the AT&T Byron Nelson

The AT&T Byron Nelson is a straightforward and uncomplicated four-day stroke play golf tournament on the PGA Tour. Play begins on Thursday as players undertake their first of potentially four days play, each one of which involves a full 18 hole round of golf. Not all players that started out on Thursday will still be in the field come Sunday. This is because a player cut is introduced after day two that separates the strugglers and the hangers on from those who are performing better. On Sunday's fourth day of play, players will all have posted their accumulated par score for the four days, and the player with the lowest score will be crowned the winner.

History of the AT&T Byron Nelson

With a history that stretches back as far as 1944, the AT&T Byron Nelson has seen it all. No wonder too, as it is the 9th longest-running active tournament on the entire PGA Tour schedule. Although there had been a tournament staged in 1926 called the Dallas Open, this was shelved after one solo run and it wasn’t until 1944 that this tournament, then called the Texas Victory Open, re-emerged. The tournament was played at Dallas’ Lakewood Country Club and was won by Byron Nelson himself whose name was added to the title in 1968.

Nelson’s name also lends itself to two prizes which are awarded at the Byron Nelson Championship. One, the Byron Nelson Prize, is presented to a person or organization who “exemplifies the ideals of sportsmanship, integrity and philanthropy that Byron Nelson personified.” The other, the Byron Nelson International Junior Golf Awards, “recognizes the achievements of junior golfers around the world who distinguish themselves with a high level of junior tournament play as well as excellence in academics, exceptional character and a commitment to community service.”

ThePuntersPage Final Say & Predictions

The AT&T Byron Nelson Championship, named after its first ever winner and native Texan, Byron Nelson, is the second half of the Texas swing and usually takes place around a month ahead of U.S. Open. It is a stroke play event on the PDC circuit and the 9th oldest of all of them. Its enduring appeal over the years has allowed the event, one of only two to be named after former professional golfers, to build up and acquire an illustriousness few other tourneys can muster.

The AT&T Byron Nelson is the leading fundraiser for charity on the PGA Tour, raising approximately $143 million for the Momentous Institute. Since 1944, when the tournament was first held, it has known something of a nomadic existence, playing at numerous courses around the Dallas area. In 2021, the tournament will move again, this time to the TPC Craig Ranch where the tradition will continue.
