The PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X are expected to herald a new generation of consoles, as well as opportunities for PS5 and Xbox betting. In this guide, we will explore the design, specifications, release date, price and esports betting scene of both the PS5 and the XSX and compare the two consoles extensively.

The Sony PlayStation 5 (PS5) is the successor to the PlayStation 4 (PS4). When compared to the PS4, the PS5 features noteworthy improvements in graphical performance, given the fact that its customised solid state drive is designed to enable high-speed data streaming.

What was made clear by the design of the DualSense PS5 Controller, which was revealed in early 2020 (7th April), is that Sony is taking a radically different approach to design of the PS5, a decision confirmed by the launch of the official hardware release trailer. The console's fifth edition was shown to have an elegant, curvy appearance set in a mix of black and white, emanating a blue glow from the interior space underneath the white exterior.

Here is the official PS5 hardware reveal trailer:

The PS5 will be available in two varieties – a PS5 console with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive with digital distribution and retail game support, and a PS5 Digital Edition, which will come without a disc drive but will offer digital download support.

Accessories like a charging station for the DualSense PS5 Controller, a media remote control, the Pulse 3D wireless headset, and a new HD camera were revealed as well. Sony announced 26 exclusive and non-exclusive games (new and enhanced), that will be available on the console upon its launch. These include Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, NBA 2K21, Resident Evil Village, Gran Turismo 7, Rift Apart and Grand Theft Auto V.

How will the PS5 Impact Esports and Betting?

Currently, most esports offerings are Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Madden NFL and FIFA betting, which are all played on both PlayStation and Xbox. Popular esports and PS4 betting sites include Luckbox and Marathonbet, and are likely to be among the best esports betting sites for PS5 betting as well.

Here are a few improvements from its predecessor that Sony could implement for the PS5:

  • List Icon

For starters, the battery life of the DualSense PS5 Controller should be longer than what the DualShock 4 Controller offers (4-8 hours). In comparison, the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller comes with a battery life of approximately 40 hours.

  • List Icon

Sony should ensure that PS5 users can stream on platforms like Twitch and YouTube in 4K, which will greatly appeal to esports fans. This was not possible with the PS4 nor the PS4 Pro.

  • List Icon

The PS5 should offer inbuilt support for wired controller connections to cater to esports betting needs. When it comes to the PS4, controller data is sent via Bluetooth, which can cause issues when there are several controller connections in place, especially at esports events where there are a multitude of controller connections.

At the time of writing, the Call of Duty League is played exclusively on the PS4; however, this could soon change in favour of the PS5 after the latter's release. The PS5 could serve as the default platform for such tournaments if the DualSense PS5 Controller turns out to be a significant upgrade when compared to the Xbox Series X Controller, which could cause gamers to migrate from Xbox to PlayStation. PS4 players also compete in the Rocket League Championship Series, which the PS5 is also likely to cater to over time.

What We Know So Far About the PlayStation 5

The Sony PlayStation 5 (PS5) is set to be released in time for the 2020 holiday season as per Sony’s official announcement (between October and December). The price for the console is yet to be announced, as is the date for pre-orders. You can pre-order the PS5 from sites like Amazon, Best Buy, Target, GameStop and the official PlayStation website.

The Xbox Series X (XSX), also known as “Project Scarlett”, is the successor to the Xbox One line of consoles. The XSX will feature improved hardware to ensure higher and crisper resolutions, as well as reduced loading times. The XSX will be backward-compatible with all Xbox One games and select Xbox 360 and Xbox (original console) titles.

Xbox Game Studios intends on releasing games that are compatible with both the Xbox One and the XSX, with some having enhanced features and functionality on the XSX.

The XSX is four times more powerful than the Xbox One X, which is obviously a massive selling point.

You can watch the official Xbox Series X world premiere trailer below:

The Xbox Series X Controller was built with the hand size of an eight year old in mind; this was to ensure that the controller fit the hand size of a larger section of its target audience when compared to the Xbox One Controller. It also comes with a new Share button and sculpted grips and is backward-compatible with Xbox One consoles.

The XSX will feature several games, including Halo Infinite, Senua's Saga: Hellblade II, Scorn, Ever Wild, FIFA 21, Cyberpunk 2077 and Cris Tales.

Here is all you need to know about the games being optimised for the Xbox Series X:

How will the Xbox Series X Impact Esports and Betting?

FIFA and Madden NFL tournaments are played on both PlayStation and Xbox, a trend expected to continue with and beyond the launch of titles like FIFA 21 and Madden NFL 21.

The Halo series is exclusive to Xbox and features several esports tournaments, including the Halo Championship Series, the Halo: MCC Pro Series, and the DreamHack Halo Series line. For some quality esports betting on the Halo series, we recommend that you head over to 888sport.

If you're an an Xbox One (console line) player, you'll probably be able to compete in the Rocket League Championship Series, as the XSX is likely to cater to this as well in the future. The Fortnite Xbox Cup comes with a prize pool of $1 million, and is an exclusive Xbox tournament, as the name suggests.

While the XSX, is compatible with the Xbox One Controller, and vice versa, we cannot confirm the same for PlayStation – the DualShock 4 Controller may or may not be compatible with the PS5. This may give Xbox an upper hand, and cause certain gamers to choose the XSX as their default gaming platform instead.

What We Know So Far About the Xbox Series X

As is the case with the PS5, the Xbox Series X will be released during the holiday period of 2020. Given the fact that the Xbox One and Xbox One X were launched at $499, the XSX may be launched at a price which is around this mark; however, we cannot confirm this. When the XSX is available to pre-order, you can do so on platforms like Best Buy, GameStop, Amazon, Walmart and Microsoft Store.

New Generation Consoles: PlayStation 5 vs. Xbox Series X

The PS5 and the XSX will be released at about the same time. While both consoles have similar processing capabilities, the XSX seems to have a slight advantage:

The accessories of the Xbox One are compatible with the XSX, and vice versa. We cannot confirm whether the DualShock 4 Controller is compatible with the PS5, which is backward-compatible with most PS4 games, while the XSX is backward-compatible with all Xbox One games as well as select Xbox 360 and Xbox (original console) titles. The XSX offers a Quick Resume feature, which allows you to pause multiple games at the same time and pick up from where you left off almost instantly.

When it comes to eco-friendliness, the PS5 is more energy efficient than the PS4 and is therefore the better option. The XSX, on the other hand, will consume twice as much power than the Xbox One X.

All in all, both the PS5 and the XSX each have their fair share of pros and cons, and it's up to you to decide which one better suits your needs and gaming habits.

The release date is estimated to be between October and December, 2020.

The cost of the PS5 has not yet been announced by Sony.

Yes, you can play most PS4 games on the PS5, as the PS5 offers backward-compatibility.

The cost of the XSX has not yet been announced by Microsoft.

When the XSX is available to pre-order, you can place an order on platforms like Best Buy, GameStop, Amazon, Walmart and Microsoft Store.

While Xbox offers the Halo series, Forza series, and the Ori series exclusively, PlayStation offers many more games exclusive to its platforms. The new generation of gaming consoles is likely to see the launch of more platform-exclusive gaming titles, after which we predict PS5 betting and XSX betting to rise in popularity. If you're relatively new to this side of betting or are looking for some top tips to up your game, take a look at our guide on how to boost your chances of winning at esports.

Both the PS5 and the XSX are excellent consoles in their own right – the similarities between the two are striking to say the least. While gamers are likely to stay loyal to their preferred console providers, the future of gaming is the true winner of this debate.
