Cazoo Masters Snooker Betting Tips & Predictions 2023

  • Three-time world champion Mark Selby has returned to form in perfect timing to make an assault on the 2023 tournament. The Jester from Leicester took down the recent English Open by beating Belgium’s Luca Brecel in the final in Brentwood, and will head to the Ally Pally in the new year looking to take win this prestigious tournament for the first time since 2013. Should Selby win this, it will the fourth time he has conquered this cup - so 9/1 looks quite generous and might not be around for long.
  • As ever, world-number-one Ronnie O’Sullivan leads the odds here, but he suffered a surprise early exit against Londoner Martin Gould at the Brentwood Centre as the world number 43 claimed a stunning 4-1 victory. The Rocket should however be refreshed following a break in Dubai after the conclusion of that event. If he returns at the top of the game, it makes it ominous for his opponents.
  • Judd Trump was another big name who had a poor showing at the English Open, being roundly thumped by losing to finalist Luca Brecel. The out-of-form 2019 world champion, who has claimed to be bored of winning, has yet to lift any silverware this season and is another who will be looking to make the most of a break over Christmas to get himself back on track. At 9/2, though, The Ace in the Pack doesn’t represent great value.
  • Neil Robertson is also enduring a barren season when it comes to titles, but the Australian seems to be happy with how he's playing right now. According to The Thunder From Down Under, he has never played better despite losing out on a place in the English Open final following an epic match with eventual Brentwood champion Mark Selby.
  • Finally, will we see another 147 break just as we did at the English Open? Three times world champion Mark Williams achieved this very feat in a match against Robertson, becoming the oldest ever to make a competitive maximum.

Popular Cazoo Masters Snooker Betting Markets

Betting on the Cazoo Masters snooker tournament is no different from betting on any snooker event, including, among many others, the World Championships and the Scottish Open. Snooker itself offers up a wide variety of betting opportunities with a manner of outcomes and occurrences open to wagers.

Outright Winners Betting

This is nothing more than a wager placed on the player who you believe will win the tournament. To give yourself the  best chance of making an accurate prediction, we recommend that you stay up to date with the latest betting tips and news.

Match Win Betting

This bet simply requires the punter to place a wager on which player will win a nominated match. With this bet, there are only two outcomes. Snooker games cannot be tied, and games must find a winner, so punters have a simple straight up choice between Snooker Player A and Snooker Player B. With many matches played throughout the tournament, there is even the possibility of stacking up your match win bets and placing them in an accumulator. Remember, some online bookmakers offer boosted odds for accas with a certain amount of selections in it.

Frame Betting

Next frame betting is a great in-play bet that can be placed in real time while you are watching the match take place. It’s a bit like the Next Goalscorer market in football, and works exactly how it sounds, through placing a wager on which player will win the next frame. Naturally, the odds will shorten the longer the frame goes on and it becomes apparent which player will score enough points that they cannot be overtaken in that frame.

Total Frames Betting

This bet is snooker’s version of an Over/Under bet and refers to the total number of frames there will be in a match. Snooker matches work by being won when a player reaches a certain number of frames that cannot then be bettered by their opponent. However, these opponents can still win many frames themselves and still end up losing. In this bet, it doesn’t matter who wins – all that is required is whether the number of frames in a game amounts to above or below a line set by the bookmaker pre-match.

History of the Cazoo Masters Snooker Tournament

  • The Masters tournament was first held in 1975. At the time, the host venue was the West Centre Hotel in the city of London. Back then, only 10 players were invited to participate, with Englishman John Spencer the winner of the inaugural event after defeating Welsh snooker legend Ray Reardon. After only a year, the tournament was on the move, relocating to a new host venue at the New London Theatre before moving on again to the Wembley Conference Centre in 1979. It was decided in 1981 to expand the field of competitors to 12, which was increased again in 1983 to 16.
  • As the tourney grew in prestige, the top 16 snooker players according to the world rankings received automatic invitations as of 1984 onwards. By 1990, potential wild card entrants were introduced, but were still required to play against the 15th and 16th seeds in order to earn a place in the tournament. The field was increased once more for the 2005 event when the need for wild card qualification was done away with for a year, and wild cards were automatically awarded entry. 2006 was the last time that the Masters was held at the Wembley Conference Centre, which was demolished later that year.
  • Wembley Arena was then elected to host the event from 2007 until 2011, after which the Masters relocated to the Alexandra Palace where it remains today. Taking place in mid-January at the North London venue makes the tournament the second successive Matchroom Sports event held at the Ally Pally after the Darts World Championships, which wraps up earlier in the month.
  • The Asian betting firm Dafabet sponsored the Masters from 2014 to 2020. In 2021 Betfred took over, only for Cazoo to take up the mantle in 2022 for the first time.
  • In 2016, a decade after his untimely death, the Masters trophy was renamed the Paul Hunter Trophy after the late 27-year-old, who was a three-time Masters champion.
  • In 2022, it was Australia’s Neil Robertson who emerged victorious, beating Barry Hawkins in the final. In a return back to the norm, fans were back in attendance.

Masters Snooker Key Stats

  • Essex star Ronnie O'Sullivan, considered by some to be the game’s greatest of all time, has won this event more than anyone else, having clocked up seven tournament wins.
  • O'Sullivan has appeared in more Masters snooker finals than any other player, having reached the last two in 13 of his 25 appearances in this event.
  • The Rocket (O'Sullivan) is also the youngest ever champion, winning his first title aged just 19 years and 69 days back in 1995.
  • The oldest player ever to win the Masters snooker is also an Essex man, Stuart Bingham from Basildon, who was aged 43 years and 243 days when he took the Dafabet Masters 2020.
  • Between 1989 and 1994, Scottish legend Stephen Hendry put down the tourney’s unbeaten record when he won five successive championships before losing in the 1994 final to fellow Scotsman Alan McManus.
  • Steve Davis won the 1988 final 9-0 when he chalked up the only ever Masters snooker final whitewash against Mike Hallett.
  • The 2011 final was contested by Chinese pair Marco Fu and Ding Junhui, the winner. This was the first ever all-Asian final at the Masters snooker.
  • Kirk Stevens posted the tournament’s first ever maximum 147 break in 1984 in the semi-final against Jimmy ‘Whirlwind’ White.
  • In all, three maximum breaks have been scored so far at the Masters and, surprisingly, all by non-UK players. The first to do so was Canada's Kirk Stevens in 1984, followed by China's Ding Junhui in the year 2007 and Hong Kong's Marco Fu who hit a 147 in 2015.
