Coral-Eclipse Tips

Though the big race is staged on Saturday along with a great support card, this meeting is run over two days. As we get closer to final declaration time, tips become more confident. I’ll have a full rundown of the best Sandown racing tips in my horse racing betting previews. Here’s an early Coral-Eclipse preview at the ante-post stage.

Friday – Ladies Day at Sandown Racecourse

Day one is Ladies Day, offering us some glitz and glamour off the track, and seven competitive races on it. It’s great to see my favourite sprinter of all time, Battaash, getting his name on the opening race at 1:50. In it, Westport looks to have the requisite pace, a horse who’d been unbeaten heading into Royal Ascot.

The Dragon Stakes at 2:25 is a Listed race over five furlongs for the juveniles. Ryan Moore has been booked early for Royal Ascot fourth Social Symbol, but the one I think may outgun him is Rebecca Menzies’ Adonius. It was notable that her young gelding, three out of three in his career, skipped Ascot and comes here fresh.

The Gala Stakes (3:35) is another Listed event, this time for the older horses over a mile and a quarter. If Pride Of Arras shows up then he’s bound to be popular, but it was hard not to be very impressed by Roger Varian’s Sallaal when he won at the Derby Festival. He could be heading for the very top.

One final Listed event on Friday is the Coral Marathan, a two-mile race that many of us know as the Esher Stakes. In it, Lazy Griff, second in last year’s Derby, is the one. He returned from 11 months off with a fine performance over this course and distance recently, and he looks like a star stayer in the making. Billy Loughnane is already jocked up.

Saturday – Eclipse Day

Coral-Eclipse betting is dominated by Aidan O’Brien, with his French Derby winner Constitution River looking to take advantage of the handy weight allowance afforded to three-year-olds. A better value option could be Saddadd, a fine winner over this track and trip for trainer Roger Varian back in April.

Saddadd could only fill third spot on his first try at Group 1 level at the Curragh, but he retains plenty of potential. Gethin, second to Ombudsman here earlier in the season, has a major shout too and the Wathnan Racing team has added a pacemaker to help him out. The Coral-Eclipse 2026 goes off at 3:35, but the day begins with the Coral Charge at 1:50.

In that race, Godolphin’s Words Of Truth is hard to oppose. He won over Sandown’s five-furlong track last month, and was always aimed at this race. With William Buick heading to New York to ride at Belmont Park on Saturday, Billy Loughnane takes over. He’s no bad substitute.

Some nice three-year-old fillies will line up in the Coral Distaff (3:00), but the eye is drawn to recent winner Starlight Lass. She only had two to beat at Newmarket, but did it in the style of a filly really going places. Intentions and jockey bookings will be interesting to watch, as Juddmonte’s owners also have Pacific Mission entered in the race at the six-day stage.

How We Select Our Eclipse Stakes Betting Tips

To compile our Eclipse Stakes tips, we analysed the relevant stats and data available, including the performances from the horses, the trainers and the jockeys over the season. We put this together with the following factors.

Age

Age can be a key factor in horse racing. The Coral Eclipse stakes are for three-year-olds and over. Recently, younger horses have had a lot of joy, with three-year-olds winning the last three editions and seven of the last 10. That is not to say that experience counts for nothing. Two five-year-olds have won in that time with one win from a four-year-old. Horses over 5-years-old are unlikely to triumph here and, while racehorses tend to peak aged four to five, the 10lb weight allowance enjoyed by the three-year-olds gives them an advantage.

Class Rating

This is a Group1 race, so experience at the top level is important. Horses who have performed well in previous top-tier races can have an advantage. From the last 21 winners of the Eclipse Stakes, 19 had previously won a Group 1 race.

Distance

The Eclipse Stakes race distance is 1 mile, 1 furlong and 209 yards (2,002 metres). It is usually won in a time between 2.04 and 2.09. So, you need to look at horses who have performed well over that sort of distance.

Form

Look at how a horse has been performing recently. Obviously, victories and consistent places must be considered. That said, a horse who has been racing well since the start of the season might not hold that form. Look for a horse who has started steadily and is hitting form in the build up to the race. Or a horse who has been raced sparingly but has been brought out for the big events and performed well.

Versatility

Weather, especially rain, can alter the going on the track. Horses who can perform on fast courses and who can still hold their form on heavier, muddier courses are more likely to preform to expectations regardless of the weather. Although the distance is short enough for a quick horse to get out early and hold on, front runners often find it difficult at Sandown. So, horses who are comfortable coming through or, sitting just off the leader can perform well. So, a horse known for getting out early will need to be able to use different tactics.

Weather Conditions

Weather conditions can be a huge factor in horse racing. Some horses can perform well in high temperatures, while others struggle. Equally, some need the warmth to move quickly, while others can get going without any problems in cool weather. Rain can make the course either slippery or heavy, and some horses cope better than others when this happens.

About the Coral-Eclipse

The Coral-Eclipse meeting is one of the highlights of the British Flat racing season, with two days of top-class action at Sandown Park. Friday's card provides an excellent warm-up before Saturday's feature, showcasing competitive racing and several high-quality contests.

The Eclipse at Sandown is the centrepiece of the meeting and one of the highlights of the whole British summer. The race brings together some of the world's best middle-distance horses in the first major all-aged Group 1 event of the season. The Coral-Eclipse schedule also includes a strong supporting card, making it one of the most important weekends of the summer racing calendar.

Coral-Eclipse Prize Money

The Eclipse itself is worth a very cool £1 million, with the winning horse collecting over £560,000 of that. The most valuable Sandown horse racing fixture of all, the main day is worth £1.355m across seven races. Adding in Friday as well, the meeting offers £1,609,000 in total prize money.

Key Coral-Eclipse Betting Insights

I love the Eclipse. This is a proper blood and thunder contest, and it’s everything that Group 1 horse racing should be about. It’s competitive, classy, and is run over the ideal distance, a mile and a quarter, something breeders look out for when creating our future champions. Here’s what I keep in mind when betting in the Coral-Eclipse.

The Class Factor

This is a Group 1 race. The top of the tree. Sure, horses sometimes take a while to reach this level, but rarely do they win an Eclipse having not proven themselves at the top level already.

That’s not to say a horse can’t win this as their first Group 1 success, but we need to at least see real progression, and a hint that they can reach the levels required.

Progression

Horses don’t simply run to the same level all the time. I expect peaks and troughs, but what I also look out for is general progression. We need a horse to be at their best to win an Eclipse, or else we need to see some evidence that said horse is improving and is about to reach a new career high.

Reaching that career high can happen at four years old, even five, so this is not all about backing the improving three-year-olds against the older horses – though they do hold an advantage.

The Clash of the Age Groups

The reason the Eclipse is so good and so fascinating is that it’s the first major race of the year in which the age groups meet. Before this, the three-year-old generation races against each other, mostly in the Classics such as the 2000 Guineas and the Derby. After Royal Ascot is over, that all changes.

We can get a good handle on what the pecking order is among older and younger horses, but when they meet, we have to decide which is better. As well as this, there’s weight to take into account.

The three-year-olds get a 10lb allowance from the older horses in the Eclipse, something that was enough for Delacroix to beat Ombudsman in the 2025 renewal.

Rest Periods

Ombudsman had just won the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and went into the 2025 Coral-Eclipse as the hot favourite. As well as conceding plenty of weight to three-year-old Delacroix however, he only had a 17-day break between major middle-distance races. That was not enough.

He skips the 2026 race to wait for York and the Juddmonte International, which is a wise move by John Gosden. Horses can win this race fresh, i.e., after a decent break, but ideally, I want to see a battle-hardened horse who has been competitive this season, but with at least three weeks, ideally four, between races.

Horses at this level put it all in, and they need time to recover and improve.

Coral Eclipse Race History

The Coral-Eclipse has been staged at Sandown Park since its inaugural running in 1886. Named after the legendary unbeaten racehorse Eclipse, the contest quickly established itself as one of the sport's most prestigious prizes thanks to its unique conditions, allowing the season's leading three-year-olds to take on proven older horses.

That format has produced an exceptional roll of honour over the years. Racing greats including Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Giant's Causeway and Enable have all landed the prize, helping to cement its reputation as one of Britain's defining middle-distance races.

While the event has been known by several sponsored titles, Coral has become synonymous with the race after first taking over sponsorship in 1976. The partnership has endured for decades, making the Coral-Eclipse one of the most recognisable branded races on the British Flat calendar.

More than 140 years after its creation, the Eclipse Stakes, as some call it, remains a cornerstone of the summer racing season. It is still the first British Group 1 of the year to bring together three-year-olds and older horses, with the prospect of that clash continuing to attract world-class fields to Sandown Park each July.

Coral Eclipse Stakes Latest Trends

Top level success vital: 21 of the last 25 winners of the Eclipse Stakes have previously won a Group 1 race.
O’Brien Eclipses the rest! Aiden O’Brien holds the all-time record for wins by a trainer with eight. But he has been even more dominant in the last four years, with three of his horses tasting victory. O’Brien’s horses are the ones to watch!
Favourites perform well: While they are not guaranteed success, favourites fare well in the Eclipse Stakes. 11 out of the last 23 favourites have won. 18/23 favourites finished in the places.
Last time out winners: 10 of the last 18 Coral Eclipse previous winners won last time out.
Winners aged between three and five-years-old: Three-year-olds have dominated in recent times, though four and five-year-olds are capable of winning. The last, and only, horse aged over five to win was the six-year-old Bendigo in the first edition of the race in 1886.
Horses for courses? Sandown wins not essential: Only five of the previous 25 Coral Eclipse winners had previously won at Sandown.

A lot of the attention here will go on O’Brien and Moore. As good as they are, these results are also down to the fact that the stable at Ballydoyle is always heavy on three-year-olds every year. As such, it’s unlikely that we’re going to see anyone with as many potential Coral-Eclipse runners as them.

This shows that eight of the last nine Eclipse runners have been won by either the favourite or the second-favourite, with that weight allowance for the three-year-olds really looking a little generous in truth.

By the time those from the Classic generation get to York and take on the older horses in the Juddmonte International, that advantage is gone. Keep that in mind when we preview the Ebor Festival in August.

Sandown Racecourse Tips

Sandown Park is one of the leading dual-purpose tracks in the UK, staging top-level events for both jump and flat racing.

The Coral Eclipse is run over a rolling terrain on Sandown’s 1 mile, 2-furlong course. The field starts on the furthest point of the track to the main grandstand, covering the first five furlong primarily on a straight, with a slight veer to the right. This is the point where things get interesting and skilled, tactically aware jockeys come to the fore. There is a tight right-handed U-turn before the final stretch. Because of this, it is harder for front runners to hold on, so there are some interesting tactical battles, with more agile horses often coming through the field.

As the showpiece event of the season at Sandown Racecourse, the prestigious Coral Eclipse Stakes generates a lot of interest. And, as a result, plenty of betting opportunities. The festival and the main race itself have many markets. We have highlighted the most popular.

Winner Betting

A winner bet is simply a bet on who you think will take victory. It is a wager placed on the outcome of the race. When picking your selection for the Eclipse Stakes, remember that you will only get your money if your horse comes in first, regardless of how well it performs. No win, no pay out on this type of wager.

Each-Way Betting

An Each-way bet has two parts. The first part of the bet is a wager on your pick to win and the second part of the bet is a place bet on your horse to finish in the places. This would normally mean ¼ of the odds for a horse to finish in the top three. For important events like the Coral Eclipse Stakes, bookmakers will often run promotions offering extra places for each-way bets, so, look out for this when placing your bets. If your research tells you that a horse is likely to run well in a top-quality field, then an each-way bet might be the best option.

Forecast Betting

Forecast bets are where you select two horses to come 1st and 2nd, in this precise order. The amount that the forecast pays is announced after the race. A reverse forecast, where you predict the first two horses but, in any order, will carry shorter odds.

Tricast Betting

Tricast bets work in the same way as forecasts. The difference is that you must place three horses rather than two. Obviously, this is more difficult to predict, so you will get longer odds. Bringing home a bet such as this one, in a high-quality race, is far from easy. A combination tricast allows you to win if your horses finish in the first three, in any order, but your bet must be multiplied by six.

Double Bet

A double is where you pick horses in two different races and bet on them to win. If both horses win, your bet is successful – however, if one or both lose, your wager loses. You could use this type of bet at a couple of other races over the festival at Sandown or, with the Eclipse Stakes and another race.

Lester Piggott is the leading jockey of all-time at the Eclipse Stakes with seven wins between 1951 and 1977.

Aidan O’Brien is the leading all-time trainer with eight wins to date, between 2000 and 2024.

Including partial ownership, Sue Magnier is the most successful owner with eight wins to date between 2000 and 2024.

Five horses have won the Eclipse Stakes twice. Orme (1892, 1893), Buchan (1919, 1920), Polyphontes (1924, 1925), Mtoto (1987, 1988) and Halling (1995, 1996).
