Epsom Derby Betting Tips Today
We’ve got two blissful days of flat racing ahead of us, and to say we’re excited would be the understatement of the year. The fields for both days are packed with a who’s who of talent from around the globe, so, without further ado, let’s jump into those Epsom Derby tips, shall we?
Epsom Derby Betting Tips Day 1 – Ladies Day at Epsom Downs
The champagne corks are popping, and what a start to The Betfred Derby Festival it is with Ladies Day. There are seven races in total, with the highlights coming from the two Group 1 races of The Oaks and The Coronation Cup.
Desert Flower leads the betting for The Oaks and rightly so. The three-year-old, trained by Charlie Appleby, has won four from four, with the most notable a Group 1 winner at Newmarket in October. A one to watch is 33/1 longshot, Revoir. Ralph Beckett trained, she has made an impressive debut at Nottingham, and her pedigree suggests the 1m 4f distance won’t be an issue. A bit of an unknown quantity in terms of the step up in class, but a good each-way bet.
The early betting for the Coronation Cup leads us to Calandagan. The Irish four-year-old is the class act in this field, hitting a career high rating of 127 in August 2024. It’s been pipped at the post (literally) in its last three races, but is without a doubt one to watch here.
Epsom Derby Betting Tips Day 2 – Derby Day at Epsom Downs
And now for the main event. Saturday is all about betting on the Epsom Derby. There are, in fact, eight races that run throughout the day, with notables such as the Diomed Stakes and Princess Elizabeth Stakes, both of which we will have more on as those fields start to get filled. For now, we can turn our attention to the Epsom Derby betting.
This week's star is The Loin In Winter. This Aiden O’Brien-trained colt has put in two massive runs; first at Curragh, winning by 2 ¼, then stepping up seamlessly to win the Acomb Stakes at York. O’Brien’s quest for a record-breaking 11th Derby win will rest heavily on its shoulders, but in terms of standouts, even at 7/2, this is the one to watch.
If you’re looking for a little more value from your Epsom Derby betting odds, then Stanhope Gardens might just tick the box. Another Ralph Beckett prodigy in the making, and he’s shown steady improvement of late, finishing close second to Delacroix in the Autumn Stakes at Newmarket. With odds of 33/1, he needs to improve to get the win but looks a tall price for an each-way dabble.
How We Select Our Epsom Derby Betting Tips
We’ve done all the donkey work for you regarding sharing our tips for the Epsom Derby, but we know that sometimes, half the fun is picking out your own bets.
So, we’ve created this section to show you how we do it. Below are the metrics we look at for each horse to see which fit the bill and are strong enough for us to invest in. And it’s not just a case of “picking the brown one” or avoiding those three-legged banana skins; it’s much more than that. Here’s how we do it:
The race is solely for three-year-olds, which is a tricky age to predict. We’re looking for maturity in a relatively young horse and one that’s developed each time it’s been run. Some colts peak at three, while others take a little longer. If you can find the ones that have matured mentally, navigating past races, and are also physically strong enough to stay on the 1m 4f track, then you’re onto a winner.
This is a Group 1 race (the crème de la crème, if you will), so we want to see horses that have either raced at this level previously or have continued to perform well as they stepped up in class. You can use the likes of Timeform or the Racing Post to see previous class statuses.
A 1m 4f track is long for flat racing, so you need to find good stamina that will stay the distance. If you’re looking at past runs, don’t get too caught up in the final result; instead, look at how well they cope with the distance. Did they stay and improve towards the end of races (good for these longer runs) or run out of gas as they’ve upped the distance?
The most researched part of our Epsom Derby betting tips probably has to do with form. At the end of the day, results matter, and at this age, we want to see continued improvements (not necessarily wins) over a sustained period. We can also look at how they’ve run in the Derby trials, such as the Dante Stakes and Lingfield Trial, which gives a good indicator as to how they’ll perform on the day.
Colts carry 9st 0lb, and fillies get a three-pound allowance to 8st 11lb. This means it’s a level weight class, but we can still consider how the horse's physical build might perform. Smaller, more agile horses will adapt to the nuances of the track better than larger, more powerful horses. However, the latter will have the strength to finish strong up the hill and power to the line.
It may be the middle of June, but this is the UK, so let’s not kid ourselves into assuming the ground will always be firm and fast. What you need to do is get a heads up on how it might fair for the days leading up to the race and then see which horses will benefit from that ground. If it rains or has been raining, horses who prefer heavier/softer ground will enjoy it more than the whippets in the firm, fast conditions. Use the previous form on different ground to match horses for the race.
Epsom Derby Jockey & Trainer Stats
Cometh the hour, cometh the man. A phrase coined so often in sport, but it’s one that bears considerable fruit with horse racing. Experience from the top jockeys and trainers is priceless with these elite races, and it’s imperative that you do your due diligence before looking at the odds for the Epsom Derby.
For the jockeys, it’s all about handling the pressure and using their experience to manage the horse and the occasion. Being able to know where to position themselves and when it kicks on are traits that trainers pay top money for to get their prized assets over the line as quickly as possible.
For the trainers, it’s all about the prep work. Strength and conditioning are key, especially when working with younger horses like you have in the Derby. To give you an idea of who to look out for, the tables below show the best jockeys and trainers for the race over the last decade.

Epsom Derby Latest Trends
For the best Epsom Derby tips today, we must look at trends to see if we can find a betting angle from the current crop of runners. The trends need to be relevant, so we’ve taken data from the last 10 years and compiled some compelling numbers and food for thought before your next Epsom Derby bet.
-
Favourites vs Outsiders: Short-priced odds for the Epsom Derby are not a sure thing. In fact, only three of the last 10 winners went off as favourites. The flip side is that there have been several high-priced winners, with four winners since 2015 priced at 16/1 or higher.
-
Last Run Performances: Take note of previous runs, as nine of the last 10 winners have each had a top-three finish in their previous start. Strong form coming into Epsom is a must.
-
Trials Form Matters: One of the best Epsom Derby day tips is to check the form at any of the trial races. These include the Dante Stakes, Leopardstown Derby Trial or the Lingfield Trial. Multiple winners have had strong showings at one or all these races and provide a great litmus test for how they might run at The Derby.
-
Draw and Running Style: A 21-year hoodoo for stall number one was finally ended in 2021, but it’s still not favoured by the riders. Most winners come from stalls five to 10, which allows the jockey time to strategically place the horse going into the first turn.
-
Trainer Trends: There has been no one more dominant in The Derby than trainer Aidan O’Brien. He’s had a hand in 50% of the winners over the last decade and often fills multiple spots in the race, as he continues to produce the highest grade three-year-olds in the world. Other notables include Charlie Appleby and John Godsen, who have been two of the few to have toppled O’Brien.
-
Winner Profiles: Only Colts have won the race in recent years. Typical winners have had two to five career runs, a Group race victory and peaks in late spring. Most have already shown the ability to handle good to firm ground, which is common at Epsom in June.

Epsom Downs Racecourse Tips
Epsom Downs Racecourse is a unique circuit; if you can understand its nuances, you’ll get an edge for your Epsom Derby tips. The first thing to note is that it’s a left-handed track with many undulations, making it a challenging ride in terms of stamina and control, as even small dips can offset a horse's stride. As a result, not every racehorse runs well here.
The track has quite a significant camber, causing those on the inside to drift to the rail. It’s often described as “quirky”, but in real terms, it just adds to the difficulty rating.
You must factor in the draw and early speed for your Epsom Derby bets. Horses that lack that initial get-up will struggle to make the relatively short run to the first corner without being trapped. They don’t need to be leading, but they need to stay out of the carnage that ensues in the mid-rear of the pack. Serpentine famously made all the running in 2020, but typically, any horse that can keep in touch with 2 furlongs to go will be in with a shout.

Betfred Has The Highlight Here
Jonathan - Betfred is this week's host and main sponsor, so if I had to side with one bookie, it would be them. They will run a ton of promotions for the race, mainly in the form of bet boosts and enhanced place payouts. In 2024, they also paid out on horses who finished second to the SP favourite, which was a nice touch. There’s not a lot to separate them and bet365, to be honest, but they will have more promos, so that’s why they beat them at the line as my pick for the week.
Epsom Derby Betting Sites with Livestreaming
Horse racing is brilliantly covered by livestreaming betting sites. Almost all the bookies that we’ve mentioned in the section above will have coverage of the race. Notables are Betfred and bet365, who only require a funded account or to have placed a bet on the race to watch from the comfort of your home.
Exclusive Epsom Derby Betting Offers

If you’re having a bet on the race, you may as well pair that with one of the best Epsom Derby betting offers that we’ve listed above.

ThePuntersPage Final Say
Something about the Derby makes this one of our favourite races of the year. It might be the intrigue to see three-year-olds on the biggest stage who can go on to greatness, or maybe it’s the course, with its quirky charm, that can catch even the best in the business off guard. Either way, use our Epsom Derby tips if you’re having a bet. We’ve poured our heart and soul into these for 2025, and fingers crossed, they can bring you some luck whilst enjoying a true highlight of the racing calendar.
Epsom Derby Betting FAQS
Betfred is the main sponsor of the Epsom Derby, so these get our nod as the best betting site for the race. You’ve got access to livestreams, best odds guaranteed, enhanced places paid and unique betting promotions for the race.
Short-priced favourites have only won three of the last 10 Epsom Derby’s. Four winners over the same period have been priced at 16/1, so backing the favourite holds no guarantees in one of the most competitive horse races of the year.
Yes, most sites will offer livestreaming. Two of the best are Betfred and bet365, which only require a funded account to watch the race live for free.
Ante-post bets are where you bet before the day of the race. This can be as little as 24 hours or as much as 12 months. Odds for ante-post are generally higher, but you won’t get any insurance if your horse doesn’t run, unless you have No Runner, No Bet.
Well, you’ve come to the right place because, at TPP, we have spent weeks, if not months, tracking horses and checking the form guides to find the best Epsom Derby betting tips. The best thing? It’s completely free.
At ThePuntersPage, we have all the latest and best betting offers for the race. This includes everything, from new account free bets to promotions that are specifically tailored toward the Derby, such as boosted odds or extra places paid.
