These are some of the very horse racing betting sites, offering competitive odds and offers for the Derby Festival.
When Is the Derby? Date, Race Time, Venue & Prize Money
The 2026 Derby Festival takes place at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey across Friday June 5 and Saturday June 6, with thousands expected to make the trip for one of the biggest weekends in the British racing calendar. Interest in Derby Festival betting continues to grow year-on-year, with ticket sales rising again and crowds of at least 60,000 expected as the organisers look for the race to return to its former glory.
Derby Day itself is scheduled for Saturday June 6, with the big race due off at 4:00pm and set to feature some of the leading three-year-olds in Flat racing. The race carries a prize fund of £2 million, including £1 million to the winner, while total prize money across the two-day festival stands at £4.75 million.
Supporting Races
As a punter, I’ll be thinking of more than just the Derby when Epsom rolls around. Naturally, the Oaks, the other Classic on the card, is a major highlight, as is the final Group 1 race, the Coronation Cup. Here are the highlights away from the Blue Riband event:
-
Diomed Stakes. A Group 3 run on Friday.
-
The Oaks. One of the five Classics of the year, featuring the best three-year-old fillies, run on Friday.
-
Surrey Stakes. Another Friday highlight, this time a Listed race over seven furlongs.
-
Tattenham Corner Stakes. The opening Saturday race, a seven-furlong Group 3.
-
Princess Elizabeth Stakes. Saturday – a Group 3 run over a mile.
-
Coronation Cup. A huge Group 1, run over the same mile and a half as the Derby and Oaks, but for older horses.
-
The ‘Dash’. Officially the fastest race in the world, a downhill five-furlong sprint handicap on Saturday.
Bets for the Coronation Cup and other supporting races will be among my regular horse racing tips for Saturday on 6 June 2026.

Epsom Derby Betting Tips Today
My early thoughts on Epsom Derby 2026 betting are locked in after some impressive trial performances during April and May. Naturally, things change, and I’ll be updating my Epsom Derby predictions as we get closer to post time on June 6.
I’m taking Item through the checkout
Andrew Balding’s colt Item moved straight to the top of my Derby betting list when he crossed the line as the winner of the Dante Stakes at York. Now unbeaten in three races, the son of Frankel was quicker in all of the last four furlongs than any other horse and he wasn’t stopping at the line – he should get the trip no problem and has the class.
Maltese Cross is the each-way play
William Haggas’ Lingfield Derby Trial winner Maltese Cross looks like a good alternative at around 10/1. Improving all the time, he has already stayed this trip, and as a son of Sea The Stars out of a Camelot mare, he’ll be keeping on when others have given up.
Those are my early thoughts, which are in line with the conclusions of a two-time former champion jockey as I found out in my interview with Paul Hanagan. I’ll be hoping for some good value, backed up by the best Epsom Derby betting offers from our top bookmakers.
How We Select Our Epsom Derby Betting Tips
There’s no waiting for luck here – every angle needs to be covered when picking horses for the Derby. Here’s some of the elements I take into consideration for each horse in the field.
The Derby is contested by the best three-year-old middle-distance horses. I need to know these horses are good enough, or at least possess the potential to be champions, regardless of their odds. Their overall profile tells me if they are improving enough – something many punters don’t factor in.
I talk about this a lot in horse racing betting previews. Horses, especially at this age, don’t run to the same level each time. They are improving, and it’s up to me as a racing expert to figure out how much they will progress from their Derby prep to the day in question.
One of the things that helps with Derby betting tips is looking deeply at the breeding. Understanding this helps me to second guess what level a horse can reach, and whether they will handle a mile and a half around Epsom.
Some horsemen are simply better than others. Top breeders and owners allow certain trainers to condition Derby horses because they can be trusted to get the best out of them, safely. That’s factored into any Derby 2026 betting tips, as is the ability of the jockey who must be proven as a top race rider.
Very few Derby horses will be proven over a mile and a half. This is where reading their profiles and pedigree can help, as I need to essentially predict who can show their true form over twelve furlongs.
The track isn’t always the stumbling block to a horse winning, but the Derby betting tips I’ll be giving out will most certainly have taken Epsom Downs into account. This track is unique, requiring a quick start from the stalls, tactical speed to stay in position, balance to get round Tattenham Corner and down the hill, and the stamina to still see out this trip. More is required at Epsom than can be found in our horse racing beginners’ guide, that’s for sure.
Derby 2026 betting will be based on the assumption that we will see good ground or faster at Epsom. Should the heavens open, I and thousands of others will need a rethink, as only certain horses in the field will have the right stride pattern and cadence, and will see the race out on soft ground.
Class runs in the family
Derby winners are all bred for the job. Understanding the pedigrees of these horses, allied with the ability they’ve shown and potential for progression, is key to unlocking a Derby winner.
Recent Epsom Derby Winners
The Classics have a rich history. These are the last 10 winners of the Derby:
| Year | Winner | SP | Trainer | Jockey | Sire |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2016 | Harzand | 13/2 | Dermot Weld | Pat Smullen | Sea The Stars |
| 2017 | Wings Of Eagles | 14/1 | Aidan O’Brien | Padraig Beggy | Pour Moi |
| 2018 | Masar | 16/1 | Charlie Appleby | William Buick | New Approach |
| 2019 | Anthony Van Dyck | 13/2 | Aidan O’Brien | Seamie Heffernan | Galileo |
| 2020 | Serpentine | 25/1 | Aidan O’Brien | Emmet McNamara | Galileo |
| 2021 | Adayar | 16/1 | Charlie Appleby | Adam Kirby | Frankel |
| 2022 | Desert Crown | 5/2F | Sir Michael Stoute | Richard Kingscote | Nathaniel |
| 2023 | Auguste Rodin | 9/2 | Aidan O’Brien | Ryan Moore | Deep Impact |
| 2024 | City Of Troy | 3/1F | Aidan O’Brien | Ryan Moore | Justify |
| 2025 | Lambourn | 13/2 | Aidan O’Brien | Wayne Lordan | Australia |
Though Aidan O’Brien has dominated things of late, it’s still largely down to breeding. Winning sires Sea The Stars, Pour Moi, New Approach, Galileo, and Australia were all themselves Derby winners. Justify was a US Triple Crown winner, and Frankel was the best horse we’ve ever seen – both also by Galileo.
We create a new champion every year, but some things remain solid and stable. Epsom Derby betting should take into consideration the class of the equine and human elements that have led to these horses running, and as you can see, it’s not always the favourite in the Derby betting odds that gets the job done.
Other Horse Racing Events for Betting
While Derby Festival betting will be hot, we’ll get to see the Epsom runners join the rest of the world’s best horses at the other major meetings throughout the 2026 Flat season. Highlights include:
Best Prep Races for the Derby
The Derby trials are always worth watching, but I never treat them as the only thing that matters when looking at the field. Ability, progression, and pedigree are still more important than which prep race a horse comes through, especially over a trip that tests stamina and balance as much as raw speed.
We call them “trials”, but these are strong races in their own right and they naturally attract the type of improving three-year-old colts connections hope can develop into Derby contenders. Unlike the Kentucky Derby, there’s no points system needed to qualify for the Derby, so trainers are under less pressure to have horses fully tuned up early in the spring.
That uncertainty is part of what makes Derby Festival betting so interesting – and why the Derby betting odds can change dramatically every time one of the major prep races is run.
These are the best Derby trials, along with this year’s top-featured runners:
| Race | Venue | Distance | 2026 Winner | 2026 Runner-Up |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ballysax Stakes | Leopardstown | 1m2f | Christmas Day | Endorsement |
| Feilden Stakes | Newmarket | 1m1f | Morshdi | Poseidon’s Warrior |
| Blue Riband Trial Stakes | Epsom | 1m2f | Saxon Street | Rebel Rocker |
| Classic Trial | Sandown | 1m2f | Raaheeb | Al Zanati |
| Newmarket Stakes | Newmarket | 1m2f | Ancient Egypt | My Love Is King |
| Chester Vase | Chester | 1m4½f | Benvenuto Cellini | Proposition |
| Dee Stakes | Chester | 1m2½f | Constitution River | Generic |
| Lingfield Derby Trial | Lingfield | 1m3½f | Maltese Cross | Bay Of Brilliance |
| Derby Trial | Leopardstown | 1m2f | James J Braddock | Pierre Bonnard |
| Dante Stakes | York | 1m2½f | Item | Action |
| Cocked Hat Stakes | Goodwood | 1m3f | Golden Story | Del Maro |
Many of these horses dropped off the Derby trail, but Ancient Egypt, Benvenuto Cellini, Maltese Cross, James J Braddock, Bay Of Brilliance, and Item are still very much in the mix.
The History of the Derby
The Derby has been on the schedule since 1780. It was created after the 12th Earl of Derby and Sir Charles Bunbury decided that a new race for elite three-year-olds should be run on Epsom Downs. The story is that the race name was decided on a coin toss – but I reckon that’s nonsense!
Anyway, the host, the Earl of Derby, won out on that one, otherwise we might have now been waiting for the Bunbury at Epsom, following the Kentucky Bunbury and before the Irish Bunbury. You get the point.
After more than 240 renewals of this race, the Derby remains as important as ever. This is the race that helps to shape the thoroughbred breed itself, testing speed, stamina, balance, and class. Many Derby winners become champion stallions later on.
That history is a huge reason why betting on the Epsom Derby still feels special. To get involved and be part of history, you’ll want the right Derby betting site, and you can compare the best online bookies we have for racing offers, odds, and promotions.
Epsom Derby 2026 betting FAQs
Benvenuto Cellini, trained by Aidan O’Brien, has been at the head of the Derby Betting odds since winning at Chester. He is closely followed by impressive Dante Stakes winner Item.
A combination of form, understanding progression, and understanding pedigrees is how experts pick out Derby bets. Horses will be trained to peak for the Derby, and it’s up to us to work out which ones will perform best, and who will handle Epsom Downs.
Yes, outsiders can and do win the Derby. In 2021, Adayar was 40/1 shortly before post time, but was backed into 16/1. Serpentine won in 2020 at 25/1, and Wings Of Eagles was a 40/1 winner in 2017.
Betting on the Epsom Derby is fluid. You can bet on the ante-post markets at any time, though it’s best to wait until all the recognised trials have been staged. After that, waiting for the final field, ground, and weather conditions is advised.
Always, but look around at our recommended sites for extended each-way Epsom Derby 2026 betting odds and the best Epsom Derby betting offers. The Lingfield Derby Trial is still a good prep, and the winner of that, Maltese Cross, is nicely priced.
