Manchester United travel to Belgrade to face Partizan in the 3rd group game of this seasons Europa League. The Red Devils will be buoyed by their recent draw against high flying Liverpool and they’ll look to take all 3 points on Thursday.
United are favourites for this game but they are expected to make a host of changes as they focus on battling against a mid-table finish in the Premier League. Partizan sit top of the group and they’ll be confident of overcoming what would be a less cohesive united side with the changes that will be made. They’ll draw upon the experiences of their current 4 game unbeaten run that they have embarked on in the Europa League.
Ole is still at the wheel for united for another week at least and on paper you would have United winning this match at a canter. Strangely, United, despite their high-quality players, have struggled to look anything near an above average side. They’ll need to find some semblance of quality in this match if they are to overcome what looks a tricky fixture in a hostile environment.
Former Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic is ruled out due to injury, while Seydouba Soumah is also a doubt.
Jesse Lingard and Axel Tuanzebe will face late fitness tests, although Paul Pogba, Eric Bailly, Luke Shaw, Diogo Dalot and Nemanja Matic are all definitely unavailable.
Potential Partizan Starting XI: Stojkovic; Miletic, Ostojic, Pavlovic, Urosevic; Natkho, Zdjelar; Asano, Soumah, Tosic; Umar
Potential Manchester United Starting XI: Romero; Young, Rojo, Jones, Wan-Bissaka; McTominay, Fred, Pereira; Mata, James, Martial
- Partizan 12/5
- Draw 23/10
- Man United 6/5
In days gone by you would probably look at this game and think United would stroll to a victory, but this version of United aren’t as free flowing as the ones that have come before them. With Partizan being full of confidence and having a good record of late I think they do have a chance to frustrate a clunky Man United attack.
The angle I like is for the match to finish in a draw which is priced at 23/10 (Bet365). I think this game will see United have a lot of possession but they have only managed 8 goals in 11 games and I’m not convinced that a second string attack will be able to do a lot better. I don’t see United losing this game as they are a fairly solid unit in defense.
Another angle that I like in this game is in the card market and I think that Guinea midfielder, Soumah Seydouba, could find his way into the referee’s notebook. Soumah has 3 yellow cards in 18 games this season and is 4/1 (Betfair) to be shown a card. He is likely to be tasked with a lot of defensive work when his side doesn’t have the ball and he’ll be up against some pacey players in Daniel James and Anthony Martial.
