Arsenal will be bitterly disappointed to come away 1-0 down after the first leg to such an inferior squad, and the onus now falls on them to get the job done to home to send themselves through. Arsenal will have had more time to prepare than usual due to having no fixture over the weekend, as they are already out of the domestic cup. The extent to what benefit they will receive will be limited as the same goes for BATE, due to the fact they are in pre-season so also did not play.
BATE interestingly are one of the few teams that have kept a clean sheet against Arsenal. Despite not winning all the time it is quite rare for Arsenal to be kept quiet. There’s not a lot to say about the side since there season has yet to begin. They qualified second in their group with 9 points, 7 point behind Chelsea. Taking away the results against Chelsea they only lost 1 out of the other 4, winning 3.
Lacazette is banned after his frustration got the better of him from the first leg which ultimately led to his dismissal. Arsenal’s injury woes continue as Holding, Bellerin and Welbeck are still out long term, with Ramsey and Ozil out for the near future.
With BATE still in preseason they currently have a full squad to choose from.
Potential Arsenal Starting XI: Leno, Mustafi, Koscielny, Monreal, Lichsteiner, Zhaka, Torreira, Kolasinac, Mkhitaryan, Aubameyang, Iwobi.
Potential BATE Starting XI: Scherbitsky, Filipovic, Filipenko, Volkov, Rios, Baga, DRagun, Hleb, Milic, Skavysh, Stasevich
Head To Head
- The first leg went the way of Bate, a 1-0 victory for the Belarusians.
- The sides also met in the 2017 group stages of the Europa League, in which arsenal came out victorious both times with a 6-0 and 4-2 victory.
Key Stats & Facts
- Interestingly in the 6-0 victory in the previous campaign, only one of Arsenals goalscorers is still at the club, Mohammed Elneny. The 4-2 victory also only boasts one surviving goalscorer, in Rob Holding who is out injured for this tie anyway.
- Arsenal 1/7
- Draw 8/1
- Bate 12/1
With Lacazette out injured all eyes will be on Aubameyang to get Arsenal over the line. There is no value at all backing him to score anytime as it sits around 2/5 with most bookies. However, the 5/2 on offer for him to be first goal scorer looks very appealing. His last 5 games which he scored in consisted of him being first goalscorer in 3 of them. In one of the remaining too he was Arsenals first team goalscorer which is also key as I would be surprised to see BATE break the deadlock.
I would be very surprised to see BATE score, as an away goal for them could all but end the tie. As said before Aubameyang will certainly lead the line in Lacazette's absence, and he will be the target for taking Arsenal through, so him to outscore the opposition also looks a good value bet against the odds.
