Championship football returns to our screens on Friday night after the international break and it’s a West Midlands derby to kick things off. These two sides have had differing fortunes so far this season, one side scoring almost at will and one side who’ve found goals hard to come by.
Darren Moore has seen his side rack up plenty of chances and goals this season but they’ve also gave up quite a few chances too with BTTS copping in all but one of their games (away to Middlesbrough). It seems like the Baggies are setting up to outscore their opponents and given the attacking quality available it is a totally understandable thought process. Expected goals data has WBA recording an xG supremacy of just 0.1 which shows they’ve been more clinical than their competitors thus far. That is a ratio that will probably need improving though should the club wanted to mount a sustainable automatic promotion push.
Flipping this over to Birmingham, despite failing to win a game so far they have a neutral xG supremacy figure with both for and against ranking at 0.9. Having said that, they haven’t played too many good teams so far and lost to the two top half teams in Bolton and Middlesbrough. It’s what’s happening off the field at St Andrews which is most concerning though..
Blues signed just the single player in the summer, left-back Kristian Pedersen. They did so whilst under a transfer embargo and have been threatened with repercussions. Why the EFL have allowed him to play could be seen as a bizarre move, especially as they declared their disappointment in the club in a statement. Birmingham spent heavily under Harry Redknapp and are still paying the same wages they dished out back then, with money that they don’t really have. It’s a worrying situation and the possibility of a points deduction still lingers. It’s another reason to be against them in this encounter, surely unrest upstairs will filter down and have an affect on performances. It seems to have done so far this term.
Isaac Vassell is still out with a hip injury for the hosts. Goalkeeper David Stockdale has strangely gone on loan to league 1 side Southend which means Lee Camp will keep his place between the posts.
West Brom have no fresh injury concerns.
Potential Birmingham Starting XI: Camp, Colin, Dean, Morrison, Pedersen, Jota, Kieftenbeld, G Gardner, Maghoma, Adams, Jutkiewicz.
Potential West Brom Starting XI: Johnstone, Bartley, Hegazi, Dawson, Phillips, Brunt, Livermore, Gibbs, Barnes, Rodriguez, Gayle.
Head To Head
- These two have met a total of 95 times with not much to choose between them. Birmingham winning 31, West Brom winning 38 and 26 ending all square.
Stats & Facts
- West Brom have won the last 3 meetings between these two sides.
- BTTS has landed in 6 of the last 7 meetings between these two sides.
- West Brom have conceded in each of their wins so far this season.
- Birmingham – 12/5
- Draw – 23/10
- West Brom – 13/10
I think West Brom have enough firepower to outscore their near neighbours in this one. However, given their leakiness at the back and historical data in the recent head to head fixtures, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Birmingham get on the scoresheet.
SkyBet have boosted West Brom to win and BTTS to an attractive 9/2 and at them quotes I’m happy to get involved. The worry would be Birmingham’s failure to score but they should get chances here and with it being a local derby I’d hope the players will be right up for it and aim to put on more of an attacking show. West Brom look the superior team here though and all of their wins this season has seen them concede.
