Cameroon, who are the current holders of the African Cup of Nations, are set to take on Nigeria in their next round of fixtures. Despite previously winning the competition, Clarence Seedorf’s Cameroon finished in second place as the final game of Group F determined Les Lions’ fate.

Seedorf’s side needed to secure victory in their final fixture against Benin to guarantee the top spot, however, their opponents provided stiff competition which resulted in a 0-0 draw. Therefore, following this result, unlikely qualifiers Benin topped the group.

Prior to their most recent fixture, Les Lions also recorded another 0-0 draw against Ghana but their opening 2-0 victory against Guinea-Bissau secured qualification. Furthermore, the African side are yet to concede this tournament, with the partnership of Yaya and Ngadeu-Ngadjui appearing fruitful, while Ajax shot-stopper Onana has silenced any attacking threat.

On the other hand, Nigeria are also struggling to find form in the continental tournament. They started their African Cup of Nations campaign by defeating both Burundi and Guinea 1-0, however, the Flying Eagles suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to Madagascar in their final game.

Discussing their recent loss, Odion Ighalo said: “I think this is a wake-up call for us. We played very poorly and our mentality was not very good. We have to go back and regroup.”

Nonetheless, Kenneth Omeruo, who spent time on loan at Leganes this season, demonstrated his confidence in the lead up to the fixture.

Speaking to The Guardian, he said: “In the end we are Nigeria,” he says. “We have to show class and win.

Team News

Luckily for both squads, they are no current injuries or suspensions to the playing squads at this time.

Potential Cameroon Starting XI: Onana, Fai, Ngadeu-Ngadjui, Yaya, Oyongo; Djoum, Malong, Zambo; Bahoken, Choupo-Moting, Toko Ekambi

Potential Nigeria Starting XI: Akpeyi, Aina, Baiogun, Omeruo, Awaziem; Ndidi, Etebo; Musa, Iwobi, Simon; Ighalo

Head To Head

In their most recent head-to-head’s, the statistics suggest that Nigeria are the superior side. The Flying Eagles have comfortable defeated Cameroon 4-0 and 3-0 in the past, with Cameroon’s most recent best performance against Nigeria being a 1-1 draw.

Key Stats & Facts

  • Despite the statistics suggesting that Cameroon is somewhat inferior to Nigeria, Les Lions are actually on a fairly lengthy unbeaten streak. However, a handful of these results have been draws.
  • Nigeria are considered as one of the favourites to win the tournament and have previously beaten front-runners and hosts Egypt in recent times.

Betting Odds

  • Cameroon – 2/1
  • Draw 9/5
  • Nigeria – 31/20

The Verdict

Despite what the odds suggest, Nigeria are the clear favourites in my book. Prior to the shock result against Madagascar, the Flying Eagles had defeated the opponents placed in front of them and the calibre of their side suggests that Nigeria will be strolling into the quarter-finals. Nonetheless, a key string to Cameroon’s bow is their defensive solidity as they’re yet to concede a goal at AFCON. However, after some time, I do believe that Nigeria will find a way through but this fixture has the potential to be a low-scoring game, possibly with just a single goal separating the two sides.
