Derby host Leeds in the first leg of the Championship play offs on Saturday night in what should be a fascinating match. There has been plenty of history between these two over the years and that’s without the ‘Spygate’ issue of this season. Pride Park should be bouncing come Saturday evening and they’ll be confident of picking up another win at home to take into the second leg.
Leeds will need all of Bielsa’s managerial expertise to get them to Wembley and beyond. The Yorkshire side are without a win in their last 4 games and they have a patchy away record of late this season. This is definitely one of the biggest games Leeds have had in many years and they’ll need to stay strong under that pressure.
Derby will be without Craig Davies and Craig Forsyth, they also have worries over Ashley Cole, Craig Bryson and Andy King.
Leeds have a fully fit squad to choose from.
Potential Derby Starting XI: Roos, Bogle, Keogh, Tomori, Malone, Holmes, Johnson, Mount, Wilson, Waghorn, Lawrence
Potential Leeds United Starting XI: Casilla, Ayling, Jansson, Cooper, Dallas, Phillips, Hernandez, Forshaw, Kilch, Harrison, Bamford
Head To Head
- Leeds are unbeaten in their last 3 meetings with Derby and they ran out 4-1 winners against them earlier in the season.
Key Stats & Facts
- Leeds have never been promoted to the Premier League via the Playoffs.
- Both sides have averaged around 2 cards per game this across the 46 regular season matches.
- Derby 11/5
- Draw 11/5
- Leeds United 3/2
This game is a tasty one with two very good sides going up against each other in an evening kick off under the lights. Derby will know that Leeds are in a bad patch of form and they need to make the most of their home advantage. Derby are unbeaten in their last 6 games and after their impressive 3-1 win against West Brom they’ll be confident of a win.
Leeds on the other hand need to get out of this slump that they’re in and Bielsa will have them fired up for this. 11 teams have been promoted via the playoffs after finishing 3rd in the Championship and that will surely give Leeds confidence. They have also beaten Derby twice this season so they’ll believe that they have a great chance.
I think at this current stage these two sides are very well matched. The draw between these two is 11/5 (Bet365) and I think this a good angle with both sides obviously not wanting to give an inch. Leeds will most likely look to play on the counter attack and although their defence of late hasn’t been as strong I don’t think they’ll be overpowered by Derby.
Both sides to score is another angle I like, Derby have scored in each of their last 4 home games and Leeds have managed to score in 3 out of their last 5 away games. The bet is priced at 1/1 (Redzone) and it has also occurred in 3 of the last 4 meetings between the two sides.
Bradley Johnson will most likely start for Derby in midfield and he’ll be tasked with stopping any Leeds counter attacks. Johnson can be a fractious character on the pitch and he could find the referee’s notebook in the dark. He has 9 yellow cards in 28 league games this season and at 2/1 (Unibet) I think he’s well priced. Johnson is also up against his former team which always makes for an interesting watch.
