Both managers of Chelsea and Newcastle have had their problems in the summer transfer window but those similarities haven’t continued into the season.
Mauricio Sarri has started life well at Chelsea, heading into this game off the back of two successive victories having seen his side score 6 goals in total against the two defences.
The Blues opened the season with a 3-0 victory over Huddersfield before following it up with a more difficult but that much more convincing 3-2 win over top 4 rivals Arsenal, to give Sarri the upper hand over Benitez so far.
Benitez has orchestrated just the single goal for Newcastle to date this season, albeit against Champions League side Tottenham, the Toon still went on to lose on the opening day of the season 2-1, just the start to their miserable campaign so far. Goalless against newly promoted Cardiff, despite earning their first point of the season, will be considered much more of a concern, however, amid Benitez’s evident frustration at his side’s transfer business during the summer.
Forward’s Solomon Rondon (loan) and Ki Sung-Yeung (free) have been brought in from West Brom and Swansea respectively, but scored just 10 goals between them last season, while Newcastle’s top scorer of 17/18 has left the club.
Alexander Mitrovic scored 13 goals last season for both Newcastle and Fulham, after joining the London club on loan in January. The forward has since left the North-East for up to £27 million, just £4 million reinvested in goalkeeper Dubravka, while Chelsea haven’t let their transfer business halt their start.
Goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois left for Real Madrid but his replacement, £79 million Arrizabalaga kept a clean-sheet on his debut, while Hazard’s exclusion from the Chelsea squad has been little felt so far.
Pedro, seemingly Hazard’s straight replacement, has scored two goals in two games for The Blues.
Newcastle: Isaac Hayden is suspended, following his sending off in the last match.
Chelsea: Eden Hazard hasn’t featured in both of Chelsea’s fixture to date, this season, amid speculation of transfer interest from Real Madrid.
Potential Newcastle starting XI: Dubravka, Dummett, Clark, Lascelles, Manquillo, Kenedy, Diame, Shelvey, Ritchie, Perez, Rondon
Potential Chelsea starting XI: Arrizabalaga, Alonso, Luiz, Rudiger, Azpilicueta, Barkley, Jorginho, Kante, Willian, Morata, Pedro
Head To Head
- These two sides have met as many as 138 times.
- Chelsea hold a narrow margin of victories over Newcastle, winning 57 matches to the latters 46 wins.
Key Stats & Facts
- Chelsea have scored 3 goals in both games under Sarri in the league so far.
- Hazard’s replacement, Pedro, has scored two goals in two matches this season.
- Joselu is the only goal scorer for Newcastle so far (1). The forward scored just four all season during 17/18.

- Newcastle 19/4
- Draw 63/20
- Chelsea 7/10
Chelsea are free scoring under Sarri, and Benitez’s concerns for his side’s transfer business in the summer has shown over the past two matches, seemingly unable to fix the problem from last season of scoring enough goals.
