Scottish-giants Rangers are back in action on Thursday. Steven Gerrard’s side kicked-off domestically with a 1-1 draw at the weekend. The ten-man Gers were dealt a harsh blow as they conceded in stoppage-time.
In the two previous Europa League qualification rounds, Rangers have not been overly convincing.
They meet a Maribor side who have proved tricky opposition over the years. The Slovenian side themselves reach this stage after keeping three the last two rounds without conceding a goal.
As is often the case with British-sides in Europe, there is a bias towards Rangers. That means they are probably a tad short.
Playing the majority of Sunday with ten-man will surely mean fatigue is a factor.
Given Rangers have won just one of five competitive games under Gerrard by more than the single goal, and the fact Maribor have a pretty good defensive record – Maribor +0.75 is of interest.
It sees a winner paid if the Slovenian side avoid defeat, while only half our stake is lost if Rangers win by one goal.
Rangers will be without midfielder Ryan Jack after he picked up concussion on Sunday.
Potential Rangers Starting XI: McGregor; Tavernier, Katic, Goldson, Flanagan; Coulibaly, Ejaria; Murphy, Windass, Arfield; Morelos
Potential Maribor Starting XI: Handanovic; Viler, Vrhovec, Suler, Ikvovic; Hotic, Cretu, Vrsic; Zahovic, Tavares, Bajde
Head To Head
- Maribor eliminated Rangers 3-2 on aggregate back in 2011. The pair drew 1-1 at Ibrox.
Key Stats & Facts
- All five of Rangers’ competitive games under Steven Gerrard have seen under 2.5 goals.
- Maribor have kept a clean sheet in all four of their Europa League qualifiers this season.
- Rangers 10/11
- Draw 12/5
- Maribor 10/3
There is less between the sides than the odds suggest. Maribor are capable of keeping things tight, and so the preference is to back them with a +0.75 start on the Asian Handicap.
