Sunderland have aspirations of bouncing back to the Championship at the first time of asking and they've an opportunity to go top of the pile with a win at home to Wycombe on Saturday afternoon.
Despite performances not being wholly convincing, the Black Cats are registering points at an excellent rate and they're doing so without two of their main men in Duncan Watmore and Charlie Wyke. Gaffer Jack Ross is doing an excellent job up on Tyneside but a few people have recently questioned whether their run is sustainable.
Sunderland are not having many touches in their oppositions box and It's becoming a hot topic on social media, I personally don't fully buy into that as a negative. Their style of play won't allow for that as much as other, theirs no target man they can laugh it up to deep in the pitch and they've been clinical when they have entered the box.
Their expected goals data is decent, so I think looking into touches in the box is a bit of a myth. They've players who can score from long range too with Chris Maguire and Lynden Gooch.
Wycombe have performed admirably since their promotion back to league 1. Gareth Ainsworth is one of my favourite EFL managers and ‘Wild Thing' has got his side playing in a functional and effective manner. They've some experienced heads in the camp which will surely help some of the youngsters at Adams Park, that blend has seen the Chairboys get through a sticky opening to the campaign to now sit in a respectable 15th place.
However, I do feel there's a slight gulf in class here. I'd expect Wycombe to battle hard and give Sunderland a game but ultimately a home win should be on the agenda.
Sunderland will remain without long term absentees Duncan Watmore and Charlie Wyke. Ethan Robson and Denver Hume will also miss out.
Wycombe could welcome back Bayo Akinfenwa, Nathan Tyson and Michael Harriman.
Potential Sunderland Starting XI: McLaughlin, Matthews, Baldwin, Flanagan, James, Cattermole, McGeouch, Maguire, Honeyman, Gooch, Maja.
Potential Wycombe Starting XI: Ingram, Harriman, El-Abd, McCarthy, Jacobson, Thompson, Gape, Cowan-Hall, Mackail-Smith, Akinfenwa, Onyedinma.
Key Stats & Facts
- Sunderland are on a 5 match winning run.
- With Portsmouth not playing, the Black Cats can go top with a win here.
- Wycombe have won 4 of their last 6 but they've all been at home.
Despite being in good form themselves, I think this match up could be a step too far for The Chairboys. Sunderland are in fine fettle and have a big crowd behind them here. Goals have been a feature of both sides games recently so I'm going to plump for a home win in a game featuring 2 or more goals for an Odds-against quote of 21/20.
I'm also happy to have a smaller play on the Half Time/Full Time market here. Sunderland have a habit of going into the break all square and doing their damage in the second half. Therefore I'm drawn to the draw HT/Sunderland FT which is 79/20 with Marathon Bet, so just under 4/1, I still think that's value.
