Arsenal could extend their unbeaten run to 22 games by avoiding defeat at home to the Azerbaijan champions Qarabag at the Emirates on Thursday night.
The Gunners have already secured top spot in Group E with a game to spare after cruising past Vorskla 3-0 in their most recent Europa League fixture with goals coming from Smith Rowe, Ramsey and Willock all coming in the opening 45 minutes.
Arsenal boss Unai Emery fielded a much more inexperienced looking side that evening and, with his side safely through as group winners, it looks likely that that Spaniard will do the same again on Thursday.
In fact, a rotated Arsenal side despatched Qarabag 3-0 themselves the last time these two sides met, in a memorable game for youngster Emile Smith Rowe, who bagged his first goal for the club.
Qarabag have managed just one win from their five games in this competition, scoring only two goals and, as a result, languish bottom of Group E with third place being the highest they can possibly climb after match day 6.
Arsenal centre-back Laurent Koscielny could make his long awaited return from injury after missing seven months of first team action. The Frenchman featured for The Gunners’ under-23 team last week.
Aaron Ramsey (ankle) , Mesut Ozil (back) and Shkodran Mustafi (hamstring) are all doubts and will likely not be risked.
Nacho Monreal remains sidelined with a hamstring problem.
Potential Arsenal Starting XI: Cech, Jenkinson, Sokratis, Koscielny, Maitland-Niles, Elneny, Guendouzi, Smith Rowe, Iwobi, Willock, Nketiah
Potential Qarabag Starting XI: Halldorsson, Medvedev, Rzezniczak, Sadygov, Guerrier, Qarayev, Madatov, Michel, Slavchev, Zoubir, Abdullayev.
Head To Head
- The sides have met only once before, with Arsenal winning 4-2.
Key Stats & Facts
- Arsenal are unbeaten in 21 matches in all competitions.
- Qarabag have scored 11 goals in their last two games.
- However, the away side lost 6-1 in their last Europa League game to Sporting.
- Arsenal 1/5
- Draw 11/2
- Qarabag 13/1
Thursday’s game epitomises what is meant by a ‘home banker’, with Arsenal nailed on certainties to win no matter what side they field.
That may seem harsh on a Qarabag side that gave it a good go in the reverse fixture but, even then, they came out as 3-0 losers on the night.
18 year-old Emile Smith Rowe has relished nights like these so far, taking advantage of Emery’s rotation and managing to score twice so far in the competition.
For that reason, the boy from Croydon is where I would be putting my money on in the goalscorer market, with Paddy Power offering 13/2 for him to be first scorer.
You can also find the same price for him to score last, or 13/8 anytime.
Such is Arsenal’s dominance in this fixture, a handicap bet of (-3) could prove profitable at 9/2.
