Saturday night sees Atletico Madrid take on take on Barcelona in a top of the table clash. Atleti can go top with a win on Saturday night and they come into the game unbeaten in their last 9 games in the league (W5 D4) and they have scored 16 goals in that time. They are also unbeaten at home this season (W7 D1). Despite that good home record they are the underdogs in this clash priced at 2/1 (Bet365) whilst Barca are 11/8 (Bet365).
Barcelona come into the game after their 42 game unbeaten home run was brought to a halt after losing 4-3 to Betis last time out. The Catalan side haven’t been at their defensive best this season conceding 18 goals across their 12 games in the league compared to the 4 that they conceded at the same stage last year.
Atleti will be excited at the prospect of facing a leaky defence and they have the fire power to cause the visitors problems. Star man, Antoine Griezmann, has again been vital to his side’s performances contributing 3 goals and 4 assists in league this season. The Frenchman 11/2 (Paddy Power) to open the scoring on Saturday night.
As you would expect, Barcelona have been rather good in attack this season. They have scored 34 goals in 12 matches so far this season and with the likes of Messi, Suarez and Dembele in the side you can probably bank on them finding the net again despite facing an Atletico Madrid defence that has kept 5 clean sheets in their last 8 league games. Both teams to score in this match is probably not a very inventive bet and at 4/5 (SportingBet) it’s not the biggest odds but this bet has landed in 5 out of the last 6 meetings between the two sides.
Lionel Messi has been in great goal scoring form once again this season, he has 9 goals in 12 league games and he also has 28 goals against Atletico Madrid in his career. Messi is 4/1 (PaddyPower) to score first on Saturday evening and I think that is a huge price for him.
In their last game Atletico Madrid grabbed a 3-2 win over Athletic Bilbao and whilst that was a very good win they did get breached twice by a poor Bilbao side. Atleti are going to be facing Barcelona without their first choice centre back Diego Godin who has a huge influence at the back. They have also got question marks over Diego Costa, Lucas Hernandez, Koke, Thomas Lemar and Stefan Savic. Alteti will be up against it if they are without the marority of those players and I think I would be swayed towards Barcelona coming out on top in a close game. Barcelona to win and both teams to score is 15/4 (Bet365) only once in Barca and Atleti’s last 11 meetings has either side won by more than a goal.
Head coach Simeone will be sweating over the fitness of Lucas Hernandez, Stefan Savic and Jose Gimenez, meanwhile, ahead of the match in Madrid.
Lucas should shake off a hamstring problem to start, while Atletico are also hopeful that Savic will be back from a calf injury, Gimenez, meanwhile, has suffered a series of niggles this season, but should return.
Further forward, Koke and Thomas Lemar are both doubts with muscle and hamstring injuries respectively.
Samuel Umtiti should make his return to the side for the first time since September.
Ivan Rakitic is unavailable for Barcelona through suspension.
Potential Atletico Madrid Starting XI: Oblak; Arias, Gimenez, Savic, Lucas; Correa, Rodri, Thomas, Saul; Griezmann, Costa
Potential Barcelona Starting XI: Ter Stegen; Semedo, Pique, Umtiti, Alba; Roberto, Busquets, Arthur; Coutinho, L Suarez, Messi
Head To Head
Saturday will be the 163rd top-flight meeting between the two sides Atletico has 50 wins, Barca 79 wins and there have been 39 draws.
Barcelona haven’t been defeated in their last 8 visits to Atletico (W6 D2).
Key Stats & Facts
- Barcelona are on a 26 game scoring run in all competitions.
- Just one of the eight league goals conceded by Atletico this season has come in the first half.
- Lionel Messi has 28 goals to his name against Atletico Madrid.
- Atletico Madrid 2/1
- Draw 12/5
- Barcelona 11/8
This will be a game full of high energy and a lot of quality. For me I would side with Barcelona coming out on top in a tight affair. Atleti will be missing a big presence at the back in Diego Godin and they could have a host of players not at their fittest going up against a high quality Barcelona side. The history of these two having close games leads me to believe that we will see a similar game on Saturday night. I think Lionel Messi will also be able to get himself on the scoresheet and at 4/1 I am happy to back him after he scored twice in his come back from injury against Betis. He has also not played any football in the international break which should mean that he is fresh and ready to go on Saturday.
