Two sides that weren’t even in the championship last season meet in their opening fixture. Barnsley were impressive in their league 1 promotion campaign last time out, Daniel Stendel played an attractive attacking approach which proved too much for a lot of their opposition. The bookies have them as one of the favourites to go back down and they’ll be eager to prove them wrong.

Stendel will have to do without the centre half partnership of Ethan Pinnock and Liam Lindsay that did so well last season. They’ve moved onto pastures new as has goalkeeper Adam Davies. The crux of the remaining squad is still there though and we can probably trust their recruitment drive after the savvy recent purchases the Tykes have made in the last few seasons.

They’ll once again pack a punch going forward with Kieffer Moore, Mamadou Thiam and Cauley Woodrow still in situ, Jacob Brown impressed in the second half of the campaign and Cameron McGeehan can add thrust and positivity from midfield. Full backs Dimitri Cavare and Daniel Pinillos will bomb on and try get involved with the assists.

Fulham are back in the second tier after a disastrous premier league effort in 18/19 which saw them be too eager and haphazard in the transfer market and ultimately fail to gel and compete. There’s more optimism now they’re back where they enjoyed a great season the one before last, they’ve arguably got the strongest team in the league but only when you exclude their backline. That defence was woeful last term and just because they’ve dropped down a league doesn’t mean they’ll start keeping clean sheets.

Scott Parker has been given the full time gig at Craven Cottage and it’s an appointment that’s gone down well with players and fans alike. They’re rated as second favourites in the promotion stakes and it will be interesting to see if he can cope with the pressure being a relatively inexperienced manager.

He has brought in Anthony Knockaert and Ivan Caveleiro to the club and they’ll add some flair as well as know-how when it comes to getting out of the division. Experienced head Kevin McDonald may be charged with the holding midfielder role that he revelled back in 17/18 whilst Tom Cairney and Aleksander Mitrovic are exceptional options at this level.

The Verdict

It’s two sides that were involved in a lot of goal heavy games last season and I see no reason for that to change. It could take a while for the new centre back partnership to mould together for Barnsley and Fulham will fancy their chances of scoring. I like Barnsley though, I think they’ll do ok this season and with home advantage they’ll definitely back themselves to score against a poor defence, especially with Stendel’s positive approach.

Therefore a goals based bet takes priority over the 1X2 market. Both teams to score looks fair at 4/6 but it’s a bit too short to put up. However, Over 2.5 goals looks nicely priced at 10/11 with Bet365 and that will be the selection here.
