High flying Barnsley welcome Luton to Oakwell on Saturday lunchtime in a game that promises to be an entertaining watch.
The home side currently sit in 4th place however they do have a game in hand over most of their competitors. Barnsley have consistently been up at the top of the major shot metrics and expected goals data this season, impressing not only going forward but also at the back. Gaffer Daniel Stendel has rotated his centre halves with the trio of Ethan Pinnock, Adam Jackson and Liam Lindsay coming in and playing well.
Up front the Tykes have a potent weapon in the form of Kieffer Moore, the player who has recorded the most shots in the League so far. His height makes him an obvious threat in the air but he is more than capable with his feet too, his clever movement in the box makes it hard for defenders to keep tabs on him. Behind Moore they have midfielders who regularly chip in with goals. George Moncur, Brad Potts and Cameron McGeehan are great options in midfield and they also like to take shots when they get a sight of goal.
Opponents Luton have also had a good start to the season, particularly considering they've just come up from League 2.
Nathan Jones is an impressive young manager and he's had a good few years to get his ideas across and all the players know how the system works.
Danny Hylton is the main man up front but he hasn't been involved in all their games this season. Without Hylton the Hatters have drawn games that they may well have won, especially on the road. It's true that Luton have struggled away from their Bedfordshire base, a W1, D2, L3 record reflects that. Their defeats have come at other good sides in Portsmouth, Doncaster and Peterborough and that bodes well for Barnsley.
Cauley Woodrow is the only player definitely out injured for the hosts. Adam Davies and Kenny Dougall are on international duty.
Luton will have to do without Luke Berry and Goalkeeper Marek Stech. Danny Hylton May have to miss out again.
Potential Barnsley Starting XI: Walton, Cavare, Lindsay, Pinnock, Pinillos, Mowatt, Potts, McGeehan, Moncur, Thiam, Moore.
Potential Luton Starting XI: Shea, Stacey, Pearson, Bradley, Potts, Rea, Mpanzu, Grant, Lee, Cornick, Collins.
- Barnsley – 21/20
- Draw – 13/5
- Luton – 3/1
Barnsley are the best side in the league this season for my money and I think the odds-against quotes on them look attractive. Luton aren't great away from home, especially against the bigger sides and Barnsley have the greater threats in the attacking half with their impressive front 4.
Barnsley are also coming off a 4-0 thumping of Peterborough last week and I think they'll bring that confidence into this game.
