Chelsea travel to Belarus to take on BATE Borisov looking to make it 4 wins from 4 in Group L. A win for the blues would all but secure qualification to the knockout phase of the competition.
Meanwhile, BATE Borisov have recently wrapped up a 13th successive top-flight title in Belarus, with a 14-point lead having been established with just three games remaining. Their Europa League campaign got off to a great start with a win against Videoton but their previous two games have seen them concede 7 goals and they now find themselves bottom of the group on goal difference.
BATE will look to in-form striker Maksim Shavysh to get the goals, the 28 year old has 3 goals in his last 5 games and he is 16/1 (Bet365) to open the scoring in this one. That huge price is probably due to his team being huge underdogs to get anything from this game. BATE are 15/2 (PaddyPower) to win the match and the draw is 39/10 (MarathonBet)
Chelsea have produced professional performances throughout the group stages and they have been able to rotate their players due to the standard of teams that they are up against. Maurizio Sarri has used 21 players throughout the campaign and he’ll continue to use his vast squad depth here. Chelsea face Everton at the weekend and they could be tempted to give star man, Eden Hazard, a run out in this one. Hazard had been out with a back injury but Sarri may hand him a chance to get back into the swing of things in Belarus.
Another Chelsea player who will benefit from squad rotation is Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The young midfielder has shone in the Europa League and he picked up a Hat-trick in the last meeting between these two sides. Loftus-Cheek is 21/2 (888Sport) and he is 41/10 (Unitbet) to score at any time. I think backing him to score at any time in the match is good value for a good attacking player who his high on confidence.
Chelsea have also started to hit the goal trail with 18 coming from their last six outings, and I think we can expect more of the same from whoever takes to the pitch on Thursday night. BATE suffered a heavy home defeat against PAOK and I think they could struggle to stop the goals in this game too. Chelsea -1 goal is 5/4 (BetStars) and I think that is very good value for a team that is starting to gel and score goals under their new tobacco chewing manager.
Another angle I like is Chelsea to win to nil at 11/8 (Betvictor), the Blues have only conceded one goal in the competition so far and they’ll be up against a BATE side who have only score one goal across 3 games.
Eden Hazard could be in line for a return after only making one substitute appearance since October 20th
Willian could also feature ahead of Pedro having been substituted after an hour against Crystal Palace, and Sarri has suggested that Olivier Giroud will be ready to start ahead of Alvaro Morata after overcoming an injury problem.
Davide Zappacosta, Andreas Christensen, Gary Cahill and Emerson Palmieri are likely to make up the back four, with Ethan Ampadu and Callum Hudson-Odoi potentially featuring on the bench.
Former Arsenal midfielder Alexander Hleb will hope to start for BATE, as will Jasse Tuominen having played his part during Finland's recent resurgence on the international scene.
Potential BATE Borisov Starting XI: Scherbitski; Rios, Filipovic, Filipenko, Volodko; Baga, Dragun, Hleb; Skavysh, Tuominen, Stasevich
Potential Fulham Starting XI: Arrizabalaga; Zappacosta, Christensen, Cahill, Emerson; Kovacic, Fabregas, Loftus-Cheek; Willian, Giroud, Hazard
Head To Head
- Thursday's fixture will represent just the second competitive meeting between the sides, with October's clash marking Chelsea's first-ever clash against Belarusian opposition.
- BATE Borisov 15/2
- Draw 39/10
- Chelsea 2/5
This should be a routine win for Chelsea and their squad looks keen to impress their manager. The Blues will surely have too much quality for BATE and I expect them to score a few goals whilst keeping their hosts out.
