Blackburn Rovers take on Newcastle in an FA Cup replay under the lights at Ewood Park on Tuesday night and they’ll be confident that they can add to Newcastle’s January Blues. The first encounter between these two ended all square at 1-1, but it was a late penalty that saved Newcastle’s blushes after Blackburn had looked fairly comfortable for most of the match.
Newcastle’s form away from home in the FA Cup makes for pretty poor reading, the Magpies last won away from home in this competition back in 2006 against Cheltenham and they have drawn 5 and lost 10 games since then. That run might be partly down to the change in focus that Newcastle have had to deal with. It wasn’t too long ago that they were competing in Europe and near the summit of the league; nowadays they are more concerned with survival in the Premier League. The Toon’s next game is a huge one against relegation rivals Cardiff at St James’ Park. With this big game coming up I can’t see Rafa Benitez starting his strongest side on Tuesday and those changes will favour Blackburn.
The hosts are 14 points clear or relegation and in a perfect place to mount a cup challenge. Bradley Dack will be looked upon again to find the back of the net again and he is priced at 11/2 to score first on Tuesday. Dack has 13 goals in 26 appearances in all competitions this season which is impressive for an attacking midfielder. Dack is also 2/1 (Bet365) to score at any time in the match and I think this is probably the safer punt and also gives us good value for a player who is scoring 1 in 2.
Newcastle will still be able to field some Premier League quality and whilst they are underdogs in this tie I can’t see them rolling over and letting Blackburn enjoy themselves. There will be cause for optimism for the Toon as Blackburn haven’t managed to keep a clean sheet at home since November conceding 9 times in 10 home games. The magpies have also managed to 6 goals in their last 6 away games. Both teams to score in this one is 19/20 (SportPesa).
I am leaning towards Blackburn coming out on top in this game and I think Blackburn to win the game by a 1 goal margin at 3/1 (Bet365) is a good option. The home side are favourites and I think they’ll just edge out their under-strength Premier League opponents who will definitely want this game settled within 90 minutes
Paul Dummett, Jonjo Shelvey and Mo Diame all missed Saturday’s defeat to Chelsea and it is unlikely that they will be risked here.
Karl Darlow will miss the game through injury.
Blackburn could be without Charlie Mulgrew who missed the win over Millwall with an injury.
Potential Blackburn Starting XI: Raya, Bennett, Lenihan, Rodwell, Bell, Evans, Travis, Dack, Armstrong, Graham
Potential Newcastle Starting XI: Woodman, Sterry, Schar, Fernandez, Manquillo, Hayden, Longstaff, Murphy, Kenedy, Ritchie, Joselu
Head To Head
- Blackburn Wins 44
- Draws 20
- Newcastle Wins 39
Key Stats & Facts
- None of the last four H2H games between these two have offered three or more goals.
- Blackburn have lost just 2 homes games this season.
- Rovers are without a clean sheet in 5 at Home.
- Blackburn 9/4
- Draw 11/4
- Newcastle 11/10
This game has the feeling of one that can produce an upset.
Blackburn will be confident that they can get the win against an under-strength Newcastle side that is more focused on their upcoming Premier League game against Cardiff.
Bradley Dack will once again be the home side’s source of creativity and goals and I think he can find the back of the net once again.
I can’t see this game being a blowout and I think Blackburn to win by a 1 goal margin at 3/1 is a good punt against a Newcastle side that don’t lose heavily very often.
