The Bundesliga returns this weekend and on Sunday evening we’ve been dealt an enticing clash as Borussia Dortmund host RB Leipzig.
It’s been all change at Dortmund with former Nice boss, Lucien Favre, replacing Peter Stoger. The Bundesliga is not foreign to Favre though – before moving to Nice he managed both Hertha Berlin and Borussia Monchengladbach across an eight-year stint.
In his opening game in charge, Dortmund were taken to extra-time by second-tier Greuther Furth.
They’ll need a stronger showing against an RB Leipzig side who are fast establishing themselves amongst Germany’s elite. Ralf Rangnick’s outfit followed up a 2nd place finish with a 6th spot finish last season, alongside European commitments.
The loss of midfielder Naby Keita is a blow, but his performances dropped last season after his impending move to Merseyside was announced 12-months ago.
Leipzig were in Ukraine on Thursday in the Europa League when held 0-0 by Zorya. They went with a pretty strong team, too. Timo Werner started whilst key creator, Emil Forsberg, was required from the bench.
Die Bullen’s away record last season read W6-D4-L7 – they actually won at Signal Iduna Park 3-2. Their record immediately after Europa League ties last season read, W5-D4-L3, including a win over Bayern Munich, so there’s no real negative effect there.
In the last campaign 21 of Leipzig’s 34 games went over 2.5 goals (62%). They kept just six clean sheets.
Julian Weigl is a doubt for Dortmund.
Leipzig midfielders Marcel Sabitzer and Kevin Kampl are doubts.
Potential Dortmund Starting XI: Burki; Piszczek, Akanji, Diallo, Schmelzer; Witsel, Delaney; Pulisic, Reus, Wolf; Phillip
Potential Leipzig Starting XI: Gulacsi; Laimer, Mukiele, Upamecano, Saracchi; Bruma, Demme, Ilsanker, Forsberg; Augustin, Werner
Head To Head
- Leipzig were unbeaten against Dortmund last season, winning away from home.
Key Stats & Facts
- Dortmund have scored in 23 of their last 24 home games
- Leipzig kept just six clean sheets in 34 matches last season
- Borussia Dortmund 19/25
- Draw 16/5
- RB Leipzig 4/1
With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang departing last January, and loanee Michy Bathsuayi no longer within Dortmund’s ranks, Favre will likely use Marco Reus centrally. The German scored four in four at the end of last season and will be on penalties too. At 11/2, there is some value in his First Goalscorer price. Marathon Bet are also offering 19/25 about Dortmund which will be shorter come kick-off. Only three-sides conceded more times than Leipzig last season.
