Brighton and Everton go head-to-head this weekend in the Premier League, with both sides looking to end 2018 with a win.
Both have enjoyed relatively successful seasons so far and both come into the game on the back of positive results. Everton bounced-back from their embarrassing 6-2 defeat to Spurs the weekend before, to beat Burnley 5-1, whilst Brighton held Arsenal to a 1-1 draw on Boxing Day.
Brighton’s home form since returning to the Premier League has been pretty impressive, losing just six games in 28 home matches. They have already showed this season that they are capable of competing with the top sides and will fancy another scalp here against a decent looking Everton side.
Despite conceding plenty of goals this season, Everton have proved to be a very entertaining side to watch. They have conceded more than any in the top 10 with 29, but have scored in all but three of their 19 league games so far this season. With the likes of Richarlison, Sigurdsson, Bernard and even Gomes in midfield, they have plenty of attacking threat and have the ability to worry most defence in the league.
Both these sides have failed to keep many clean sheets this season, with Everton only keeping four and Brighton only keeping three, which would suggest goals are the order of the day here.
First choice ‘keeper, Mat Ryan, is unavailable for Brighton after linking up with Australia for the next month at the Asian Cup. Lewis Dunk served out his one-match suspension against Arsenal and should return to the starting eleven.
Idrissa Gueye is back from injury and should slot back into the starting side here. Richarlison started on the bench at the weekend but is expected to start here.
Potential Brighton Starting XI: Button; Bruno, Dunk, Duffy, Bernardo; Knockaert, Bissouma, Propper, March; Groß; Murray
Potential Everton Starting XI: Pickford; Mina, Keane, Zouma; Coleman, Gueye, Gomes, Digne; Sigurdsson, Bernard; Richarlison
Head To Head
- These two sides have only ever played 11 matches and Brighton have just one win ever against Everton. There have been three games between the two since Brighton returned to the Premier League, with one draw and two Everton wins.
Key Stats & Facts
- There have been over 2.5 goals scored in Everton’s last four Premier League matches.
- Everton have seen BTTS in 13 of their 19 PL games so far this season.
- Since returning to the PL, Brighton have only lost six of their 28 home league games.
- Brighton – 13/5
- Draw – 23/10
- Everton – 5/4
As I already mentioned above, both these sides have been involved in the goals recently. Everton have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last six PL games and Brighton’s last clean sheet came back in October (10 games without). ‘BTTS’ has landed in 13 of Everton’s 19 PL games this season and in 11 of the Seagull’s 19 and over 2.5 has landed in a combined 21 of 38 between these two (12/19 Everton, 9/19 Brighton).
Everton’s record against bottom half sides this season has been pretty good. In their 10 matches against sides 11th or lower, Everton’s record reads; W6 D3 L1. In those 10, they have scored two goals or more in six of them and given they come into this game on the back of a 5-1 thumping away to Burnley, they will fancy their chances big time here. They are valued at 5/4 to win here, which looks decent enough to me, but given goals are expected, I’m happy to add over 2.5 goals in an Everton win to make a better price.
