Aston Villa make the trip down the M5 to take on Bristol City on Friday night. It’s fair to say that Villa haven’t been at their best this season, especially defensively and at 2/1 they don’t look great value to me.
Bristol City have had a better start than their counterparts, the Robins currently lie in 8th place on 14 points. Lee Johnson has a greater wealth of options to him compared to the start of the campaign, Famara Diedhiou is back in the fold after missing the first 5 games of the season and he gives them a physical threat up front. Tomas Kalas will miss out here though and that could mean a return for ex-Villa centre half Nathan Baker.
Tammy Abraham had a very successful spell with Bristol City in 2016/17 and he will return to Ashton Gate but this time with Villa. He’s 9/4 to notch anytime and that could catch a few punters’ eyes. On the other hand, former Villa striker Andreas Weimann is now at Bristol City and he’s started the season in fine form scoring 5 times so far. The Austrian is 23/10 to add to his tally, whereas both Abraham and Weimann to score is priced up at 8/1.
As mentioned Bristol City centre back Tomas Kalas is out for a few weeks with a fractured jaw, the game could come too early for Bailey Wright who is returning from injury. Midfielder Jens Hegeler is back available for selection too.
Steve Bruce could give a first start to loan signing Yannick Bolasie. Strikers Keinan Davis and Scott Hogan are unavailable.
Potential Bristol City Starting XI: Maenpaa, Hunt, Webster, Baker, Kelly, Eliasson, Pack, Brownhill, O’Dowda, Diedhiou, Weimann.
Potential Aston Villa Starting XI: Nyland, El Mohamedy, Chester, Jedinak, Hutton, Grealish, McGinn, Hourihane, Bolasie, Abraham, Kodjia.
Head To Head
- Aston Villa have the far superior head to head record in their 22 meetings. They’ve won 11 and lost only 3, the remaining 8 were draws.
Stats & Facts
- Aston Villa have won just 1 of their last 7 despite scoring in all of those games.
- Bristol City have recorded 14 points in their opening nine fixtures for the third consecutive season.
- Bristol City – 6/4
- Draw – 12/5
- Aston Villa – 2/1
Bristol City don’t look a bad price here, however they have lost their last two games after a good run and that could explain the price.
Aston Villa have been dreadful at the back this season and having Mile Jedinak at centre half has not worked. The big presence of Famara Diedhiou will look to peel onto him and he could get some joy.
However my main selection here will be Bristol City ‘double chance’ and over 1.5 goals at 4/5 with 188 bet. I’m expecting goals here but I feel Villa’s defence is shakier than Bristol City’s so I’m siding with the hosts.
