Derek Adams worked wonders at Plymouth Argyle last season as they ran close to a play-off position. They’ve found things more difficult this time around, however. Mainstays such as Sonny Bradley have departed and there is still a reliance on key-man Graham Carey to produce in the final-third. The Pilgrims are winless in the league this season.
Bristol Rovers have grown organically under Darrell Clarke. Promotion from the National League was swiftly followed by promotion to League One. Consecutive mid-table finishes in the third-tier is not a bad return given the key players they’ve had poached.
The Pirates have also started slowly this season, winning just one of six games.
In their last two games, Plymouth have lost 5-1 and 3-0. Although Bristol Rovers might not be of the quality as Peterborough and Portsmouth, they are still a strong footballing outfit.
At home since arriving in League One under Clarke, Rovers’ home record reads W24-D12-L13. It’s worth noting they’ve actually lost all three home games this season, though.
Bristol Rovers are without a number of players due to a combination of injury, suspension and international duty.
The game is an early kick-off due to safety concerns after unsavoury scenes when the pair met in March.
Both Chris Lines and Joe Martin will miss out for the Pirates through suspension. Midfielder Stuart Sinclair is a doubt. Tom Lockyer is away on International duty with Wales. Liam Sercombe missed out last week through injury but could return.
Plymouth have no fresh concerns.
Potential Bristol Rovers Starting XI: Bonham; Leadbitter, Craig, Broadbent, Clarke; Matthews, Upson, Clarke, Rodman; Nichols, Payne
Potential Plymouth Starting XI: Macey; Riley, Edwards, Sawyer, Smith-Brown; Songo’o, Ness; Sarcevic, Carey, Grant; Ladapo
Head To Head
- The last five meetings between these sides have seen both teams score.
Key Stats & Facts
- Five of Bristol Rovers’ six league games this season have seen BTTS land.
- Plymouth have failed to keep a clean sheet this season.
- Bristol Rovers
- Draw 13/5
- Plymouth 16/5
At full-strength I’d be tempted by Bristol Rovers but given the number of absentees and the low-confidence bred by poor results, they’re difficult to back at odds-on. Both teams to score in this derby duel looks the strongest angle. Neither side have been convincing defensively.
