On Thursday evening, Burnley’s short-lived European journey came to an end as they failed to peg back the deficit against Olympiacos.
The Clarets have made a poor start to the season, with Thursday night commitments taking their toll on league form. Burnley sit on just one point after three games and have conceded inside the first-five minutes of each of their last two.
Since the start of the 2016/17 season, 25 of Burnley’s 39 league games at Turf Moor have seen Under 2.5 goals. That’s an eye-catching 64%.
Sean Dyche’s outfit are very much built from the back and earn their money aerially and from second-balls in the final-third.
Manchester United have now lost two games on the bounce and with Jose Mourinho now odds-on in the sack race, there are clear issues.
Utd did show more purpose and intensity with the ball against Spurs last Monday but there will be pressure on them this Sunday. If they don’t get an early goal, things could get nervy.
Utd have won 20 of 39 Premier League away games since Mourinho took charge. 20 of those have also seen Under 2.5 goals, which is 51%.
The return of Nemanja Matic will add solidity to United and I’m happy to back Under 2.5 goals at 21/25.
The Serbian’s return also saw Fred operate in a more advanced role versus Spurs. The Brazilian had three shots on Monday and could be value to score anytime at 8/1.
Burnley’s injury list was lengthened after Johann Berg Gudmundsson joined absentees Steven Defour, Nick Pope and Robbie Brady last week.
Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Diogo Dalot and Sergio Romero are missing for United.
Potential Burnley Starting XI: Hart; Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Ward; Lennon, Cork, Westwood, McNeil; Wood, Barnes
Potential Man Utd Starting XI: De Gea; Valencia, Bailly, Smalling, Shaw; Matic, Pogba, Fred; Lingard, Lukaku, Sanchez
Head To Head
- Man Utd have kept three consecutive clean sheets at Turf Moor.
Key Stats & Facts
- Burnley have scored the opening goal in just one of their last eight Premier League games.
- Man Utd have kept two clean sheets in their last eight Premier League away games.
- Burnley 5/1
- Draw 29/10
- Man Utd 4/6
It’ll be back to basics for these two out of form sides and given how low scoring their games have been over the last season or two, 21/25 about Under 2.5 goals looks a good bet.
