Cagliari host Milan on Sunday evening, as the Sardinian outfit look to record consecutive wins as Serie A football returns after last week’s international break.
After a first-round loss away to Empoli, the Rossoblu drew 2-2 with Sassuolo and last week travelled to Bergamo, where they defeated Atalanta 1-0. Their win last week impressed many over a very tough Atalanta side, with Nicolo Barella’s strike proving the difference between the two sides. Leonardo Pavoletti was instrumental in Cagliari’s victory, providing a great option up front as a serious threat in the air.
However, Milan will enter the match as hot favourites. Despite their slip-up against Napoli in Round 2 where they led 2-0, Gennaro Gattuso’s men have looked very impressive. Before the international break, a last-gasp Patrick Cutrone goal saw them sink a disappointing Roma 2-1.
They have shown to have implemented Gattuso’s new style well, while star signing Gonzalo Higuain has put in two very impressive shifts so far in a Rossonero shirt. He was unlucky to score in last round’s victory after correctly being denied by the VAR.
Luca Cepitelli remains on the sidelines with an injury as Rolando Maran has almost a full squad to choose from.
Milan, however, have a few injuries to their depth, as Andrea Conti, Ivan Strinic, Riccardo Montolivo and Cutrone are sidelined for this weekend’s clash.
Potential Cagliari Starting XI: Cragno, Padoin, Klavan, Romagna, Srna, Castro, Bradaric, Barella, Ionita, Sau, Pavoletti
Potential AC Milan Starting XI: Donnarumma, Calabria, Musacchio, Romagnoli, Rodriguez, Bonaventura, Biglia, Kessie, Suso, Calhanoglu, Higuain
Stats & Facts
- Cagliari have only beaten AC Milan eight times out of 72 attempts in Serie A, losing 39 times – more than against any other Serie A opponent in history.
- Six out of the past ten meetings between these two sides have produced over 2.5 goals.
- Milan have conceded three goals in their two games already this season.
- Cagliari – 17/4
- Draw – 11/4
- Milan – 4/5
Cagliari have firepower as shown so far this season. As aforementioned, Leonardo Pavoletti and Nicolo Barella have the potential to cause problems for Milan’s defence. However, I can’t see Milan letting a valuable three points slip.
A trip to Sardinia is always tough in Serie A, but Milan should be able to get the job done rather comfortably. Sky Bet currently have Milan with a -1 handicap at a great 85/40 which is very handy. Their potent attacking trident is sure to be firing for this match, which should prove too much for Cagliari.
