Both of these teams unfortunately got off to losing starts this campaign with defeats at Bournemouth and at home to Spurs respectively. For Cardiff, with being the bookmakers favourites for relegation, this came as no surprise but they didn’t lose without fight. One key asset to The Bluebirds and to all of Neil Warnock’s sides is that they will always fight, attempt to stay in the game and never give up. If Cardiff are to stay up they must use this mentality to enable them to produce some kind of quality, which is always needed in a Premier League campaign. Their home form was very good in the Championship last year and they must replicate this to survive here.
On Saturday they face Newcastle, a team who have have spent just £22 million on their squad this summer. In stark comparison to promoted teams such as Fulham spending in excess around £100 million. This summer’s transfer dealings have left Newcastle fans even more enraged at owner Mike Ashley who seems to be unwilling to extend and improve Benitez’s squad of players. The Magpies have added 6 new players with signings like Fernandez and Ki from Swansea clearly adding quality. The Toon’s pre-season wasn’t the best, winning just 1 of 5 games before losing to Spurs at home last weekend.
On paper, this doesn’t seem to be the most exciting of games to be kicking off Sky Sports’ weekend of live football but it is an important game for both teams as neither side will want to pick up their second loss of the season already. For Cardiff it is about building foundations for the season at their home ground and beginning to make it a fortress. For Newcastle they need to be winning at sides like Cardiff if they are to pursue a top half finish, which I am sure will be on Benitez’s wishlist more than anything.
Aron Gunnarsson is sidelined for the hosts.
DeAndre Yedlin looks set to miss out while Florian Lejuene remains a long term absentee.
Potential Bluebirds Starting XI: Etheridge, Peltier, Manga, Bamba, Morrisson, Bennett, Patterson, Ralls, Hoilett, Reid, Mendez-Laing
Potential Toon Starting XI: Dubravka, Manquillo, Lascelles, Fernandez, Dummett, Ritchie, Diame, Shelvey, Kenedy, Rondon, Perez
Head To Head
- Newcastle have won 10 of the last 11 games.
- 9 of the last 12 have seen over 2.5 goals.
Key Stats & Facts
- Both teams conceded twice in their opening fixture.
- Cardiff have only won 4 of their last 29 premier league games (lost 3 of last 4 to nil).
- Cardiff 2/1
- Draw 21/10
- Newcastle 29/20
Recent form is strongly in Newcastle’s favour and with Newcastle’s Premier League experience in comparison to The Bluebirds’, I expect a strong performance from the away side.
