Chelsea have had a huge weight lifted off their shoulders after the weekend, with them picking up 3 points and United along with Arsenal both drawing it means they have secured a top 4 spot. They currently sit 3rd which after the turmoil the club was in after Christmas will seem like a successful end to the campaign for Sarri’s men and may be enough for the Italian to win over the fans that seem to oppose him.
Frankfurt suffered a thumping defeat at the weekend, with a 6-1 defeat to Leverkusen, which has put the two sides on level points in the race for the top 4 spots. Therefore Frankfurt come into the game with extra pressure which is likely to play into Chelsea’s hands as they can take advantage of the away sides nerves. It would be unlikely for Frankfurt to miss out on Europe all together, however their chances of getting Champions League football have taken a serious hit as now there is 4 teams all within 3 points of each other and only 1 spot up for grabs.
The first leg of the game came out probably as expected, Frankfurt have shown they aren’t a pushover but Chelsea’s class and squad quality shows in big games. Chelsea still see themselves as favourites for the competition with best priced currently at 10/11 to lift the trophy. After the result from the first leg in the other tie it looks likely we could see an all English final, with Arsenal getting a 3-1 lead after a late Aubameyang goal gave the home side some freedom.
Even if Frankfurt were to get knocked out here, it would be an extremely successful season for the club, who are expectedly going to secure their best finish for over 20 years, and their furthest progression in Europe to date.
Chelsea are missing Rudiger and Hudson-Odoi with longer term injures, while Kante also remains a doubt after an early bath at the weekend with a suspected hamstring injury. 3 huge blows for Chelsea.
Frankfurt’s only real noticeable absentee is Sebastien Haller, the striker is unlikely to be back for the remainder of the season. They have a few other injuries but to less important players that don’t regularly feature.
Potential Chelsea Starting XI: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Luiz, Christensen, Emerson, Jorginho, Barkley, Loftus Cheek, Willian, Higuaín, Hazard
Potential Frankfurt Starting XI: Trapp, Hasebe, Hinteregger, Abraham, Costa, Kostic, Fernandes, Rode, Gacinovic, Rebic, Jovic
Head To Head
- The sides drew 1-1 In the first leg, Chelsea getting a crucial away goal.
Key Stats & Facts
- Chelsea are undefeated in their last 16 Europa League matches.
- Frankfurt are similarly undefeated in 16 of their last 17.
- Frankfurt’s away matches in this competition average 3.67 goals per game.
- Chelsea 4/11
- Draw 4/1
- Frankfurt 13/2
I expect Chelsea to qualify as a formality. They showed in the first leg they have a large quality advantage over Frankfurt and I would expect them to make it show in the second leg. Frankfurt have shown on multiple occasions however they have what it takes to score the goals. Jovic has been their star man this season and has racked up 9 goals in 13 games in the Europe League. With this in mind I feel comfortable backing the Chelsea win and both teams to score, as a much better method of getting value than the 4/11 outright price.
