Two of the sides that have been involved in recent finals of this competition meet in London on Wednesday night. Chelsea cruelly lost the EFL cup final last season on penalties against Manchester City and Frank Lampard will be looking to go one better than Maurizio Sarri and claim the trophy.
The Blues are firing on all cylinders at the moment and away wins in the champions league at Lille and Ajax are major statements of intent at places that are notoriously difficult to go. I've been impressed with how Lampard has got a good balance in the team, he's managed ego well and that could be down to his standing at the club, his legendary status means he naturally demands respect.
Christian Pulisic, who was largely a peripheral player in the earlier part of the season has come to the fore, firstly with an impressive cameo in Amsterdam, setting up the winning goal and then notching a perfect hat-trick at Burnley this weekend just gone. He is in a battle for a wide starting birth along with Willian, Pedro and Callum Hudson-Odoi and the latter may get another chance to stake his claim here.
Manchester United have won back-to-back games, that's so hard to comprehend! I jest of course, however it's important not to read too much into wins over Partizan Belgrade and Norwich. For the large part, the Red Devils have been shot shy and desperately lacking craft and quality in the final third. Norwich also had a raft of defensive injuries and that was once again highlighted in the gaps they left for the likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.
That being said, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were fully deserving of their win, it was easily their best attacking performance of the season with them racking up an expected goals figure of over 3. The link up between Rashford, Martial and Dan James was sublime and Scott McTominay bossed the midfield. With a lot of players out Solskjaer might see it fit for him to rest his best players for the weekend and the lacking of quality in depth could be an issue for the visitors.
Chelsea remain without Antonio Rudiger, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Ross Barkley, N'Golo Kante and Andreas Christensen.
United have a lengthy injury list with the likes of Paul Pogba, Eric Bailly and Timothy Fosu-Mensah all ruled out. There are doubts over the fitness of Nemanja Matic, Luke Shaw, Axel Tuanzebe and Diogo Dalot too.
Potential Chelsea Starting XI: Caballero, James, Zouma, Tomori, Emerson, Jorginho, Kovacic, Hudson-Odoi, Pulisic, Pedro, Giroud.
Potential Manchester United Starting XI: Romero, Wan-Bissaka, Jones, Maguire, Rojo, Williams, Fred, McTominay, Mata, Lingard, Greenwood,
Key Stats & Facts
- Chelsea have won 7 in a row in all competitions.
- Manchester United's weekend win at Norwich was their first premier league away win in 9 games.
- Manchester United have scored just 4 goals in their last 9 premier league away games.
- Chelsea – 1/1
- Draw – 27/10
- Manchester United – 3/1
Both these two have had plenty of fixtures with European commitments too and therefore this competition may not pull rank as one of the most important so we could see plenty of rotation from the pair. Ultimately then it is useful to look at the relative squad strength between the two and even though Chelsea are in the midst of a transfer ban they still have a roster packed full of quality.
The likes of Olivier Giroud, Michy Batshuayi, Pedro, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reece James can all come in and that far outweighs the second string available for the Red Devils. Solskjaer may bring in the youngsters like James Garner, Mason Greenwood, Tatith Chong and Brandon Williams into the starting line up as he will likely keep Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial rested for the weekend trip to Bournemouth.
Although United got that much needed win at the weekend they were up against a poor Norwich side who had plenty of injuries. Overall they have been woeful this season and I'm surprised we can get even-money on them to lose here. Chelsea are flying with 7 wins on the bounce, the Blues have scored an average of 3 per game in that run and competition for places is heating up. They should have more than enough to dispose of a United side with just two wins in seven on the road this season.
