Chelsea are having a pretty poor season given everything. They are actually 4 points better off than they were at this point last season, however you wouldn’t think so due to the bad press they are receiving. They made the cup final but got beat by Manchester City, they also looked as if they had top 4 all but wrapped up in January, and now it looks like they need a miracle to make the top 4. Given this it’s likely that winning this competition will be the only chance Chelsea have of making a return to the Champions League for next season. They will also feel confident in Europa as there is probably only a few teams in this competition that have the ability to defeat Chelsea on their day.
Kyiv currently sit second in the Ukrainian league behind Shakhtar. There is only one game left before the break in their season, although they do have a cup quarter final in the near future against rivals Shakhtar. Kyiv are unlikely to be able to force any sort of challenge towards Chelsea, they posed absolutely zero threat at Stamford Bridge, manging 0 shots on goal. It is difficult to see how this leg would be any different. Chelsea will more than likely field a similarly weakened side as they did in the first leg, giving the opportunity to the fringe players in the squad before they face Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.
Sarri will be looking to keep a hold on the dressing room at the Bridge and progressing far in this competition may look to be his saving grace. It is unquestionable that Chelsea have been well below standards these last few seasons, and although the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool have drastically improved, Chelsea have also passed them on the highway going in the opposite direction.
Drinkwater and Van Ginkel are both still out for Chelsea for probably the rest of the season, however neither of the pair have played a part for the Blues so far.
Kyiv have the return of Verbic after his suspension from the last game. Fran Sol and Pivaric are both not fit to return for the clash.
Potential Kyiv Starting XI: Boyko, Kedziora, Burda, Shabanov, Mykolenko, Shepelev, Sydorchuk, Tsygankov, Shaparenko, Verbic, Garmash.
Potential Chelsea Starting XI: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Luiz, Christiensen, Alonso, Barkley, Kante, Kovacic, Higuin, Hazard, Willian
Head To Head
- Chelsea breezed to a 3-0 victory at home against Kyiv in the 1st leg last week.
- The sides also met in the 15/16 campaign which saw a 0-0 draw at the home of Kyiv, and an unflattering 2-1 victory for Chelsea at the Bridge thanks to a Dragovic own goal.
Key Stats & Facts
- Chelsea are still yet to lose in the competition. They finished the group stage with 5 wins and one draw.
- Kyiv also topped their group above Rennes, and they actually did the double over the French side, who look in a pole position to knockout the Gunners in their 2nd leg tie.
- Kyiv 13/5
- Draw 23/10
- Chelsea 12/11
I see Chelsea just biding their time in the tie. They know a 3-0 victory from the first leg is enough for them to qualify so the focus will be on defence. Chelsea to keep a clean sheet looks a great price. I can see this game really lacking goals, especially for Kyiv.
