Harry Kane Leads Betting For Sports Personality Of The Year

Harry Kane is currently leading the market in BBC Sports Personality of the Year, according to the odds. The award will be announced Sunday evening at around 7pm.

The England forward is currently favourite (6/4 with Betway) after his heroic leadership at the World Cup which led us to the semi-final for the first time since 1966. He added to his impressive personal accolades with the golden boot award, after scoring 6 goals on the journey, including a hattrick against Panama. A summer I’m sure many England fans including myself will never forget.

Sitting just behind Kane in the odds is Sky’s Geraint Thomas (11/4 with SkyBet) after cruising to the Tour De France trophy, and also F1 star Lewis Hamilton (11/2 with Bet Victor) who added an impressive 5th World Championship title to his name. It is now looking more likely than ever that we will see Hamilton break the legendary Michael Schumacher’s 7 career titles, and if he does, I think it’s safe to say in that year the award for SPOTY will be a one-horse race with only Hamilton’s name on the trophy.

Other outsider candidates in with a shout are Tyson Fury (18/1 With Bet365), who has recently been headlining all media with his dream comeback being robbed away from him after a draw against Deontay Wilder, in which I’m sure we can expect a rematch fuelled for revenge. Although due to his chequered past it is unlikely we could see the ‘peoples Champion’ collect the silverware. Ronnie O’Sullivan (14/1 with Betfred) also deserved a mention after he won his 7th UK championship, although again it seems unlikely as he has had much better years then this in his career yet never been given a sniff at the prize.

Lizzie Yarnold (28/1 with 888Sport) and Alastair Cook (40/1 with Boyle Sports) also offer some great value after Yarnold followed up her 2014 performance landing Gold again, making her Britain’s most successful Winter Olympian ever. Cook having announced retirement from England duty earlier this year will end his stay having racked up some impressive national and international records and sent himself out in style with his 33rd century dubbed his ‘farewell century’.

The format has been changed this year with the nominees only being announced earlier on the night, previously this was done in advance of the date. This will leave the betting market very open in the lead up to the show with it expected to break records having the most bets placed this year on SPOTY.

The other notable award that will be announced is Sporting Moment of the Year, which again is favourite to go to Harry Kane’s 3 Lions squad (4/5 with Coral). Other front runners in the category consist of Tyson Fury’s bout with Deontay Wilder and Alistair Cooks ‘Farewell century’. In the World Sport Star of the year we also see an Odds-on favourite with Italy’s Francesco Molinari (8/11 with Skybet) after his Open Championship victory, aswell as taking 5 points from 5 in his outstanding performance for Europe at the Ryder Cup.
