Relegation favourites Huddersfield defied the odds when surviving last season. This time around the Terriers will be better set – they know what to expect.
David Wagner’s side will however need to improve on their latter 2017/18 form. Huddersfield boasted a W6-D5-L8 home record last season.
They lost three of their last four at the John Smith and scored just once in their last five on home turf. In fact, Huddersfield scored just three in their last ten matches last season.
Goals are an issue that needed addressing. As are their resources, the Terriers have had to be inventive in the transfer market. They’ve brought in the likes of Ramadan Sobhi, Adama Diakhaby, and Isaace Mbenza in attack.
Maurizio Sarri took over Chelsea in a unique situation. He’s had little time to work with his key players as a result of the World Cup.
Thibaut Courtois has departed, and there is still uncertainty over Eden Hazard’s future.
In Sarri’s first season at Napoli, the Partenopei dropped 19 points in their first 19 games compared to just seven in the latter 19. It took time for the Italian to implement his philosophy, and that could again be the case at Chelsea.
His Napoli side also finished off better in terms of both finishing position and points in his second season.
Huddersfield new signings Juninho Bacuna and Erik Durm are both out.
Gary Cahill, N’golo Kante, Eden Hazard and Olivier Giroud returned to training earlier this week.
Potential Huddersfield Starting XI: Lossl; Hadergjonaj, Schindler, Zanka, Kongolo; Mooy, Hogg; Van la Parra, Pritchard, Diakhaby; Mounie
Potential Chelsea Starting XI: Caballero; Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Alonso; Jorginho, Barkley, Fabregas; Pedro, Morata, Hudson-Odoi
Head To Head
- The two meetings last term saw Chelsea 3-1 victors, before a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.
Key Stats & Facts
- Huddersfield scored in just one of their last five home games last season.
- Huddersfield ended last season scoring three times in their last ten Premier League matches.
- Huddersfield 11/2
- Draw 3/1
- Chelsea 8/13
Chelsea are obviously the most likely winners, but there is mileage in the Terriers’ price. We can get them with a +1 start on the Asian Handicap at 5/6. It sees a winner paid should Huddersfield avoid defeat, with our stake refunded should they lost by just the single-goal.
