The Baggies have been the great entertainers this season, they score plenty but their defence is extremely charitable and it makes for some attractive encounters.

Darren Moore’s side have scored a league high 37 goals this term however they’re conceding 1.48 expected goals a game; that’s only better than 4 teams in the division. ‘Bruno’ likes to play 3 at the back, it’s his attacking philosophy but it always leaves gaps to exploit. Kieran Gibbs and Matt Phillips are extremely attacking full backs, more like wingers really. Their three centre halves split and there is the space if the opposition can turnaround position quickly. It’s been their downfall this term.

Moore was forced into a back 4 last time out against Leeds and it did work, whether he persists with it will be seen. They still conceded in that game, mind.

Loan signing Harvey Barnes has been a leading light for the Black Country boys so far. Not only is his movement and dribbling superb, he’s also proving a danger in front of goal. Barnes is averaging 3.3 shots per game, making him a major threat for the visitors here. That figure is more than strikers Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez.

Ipswich have had a torrid start to the season with just the single win to their name thus far, leaving them bottom of the pile. Gaffer Paul Hurst paid the price by losing his job and the hierarchy plumped for a man who’s well known for his time in East Anglia, Paul Lambert.

The Tractor Boys have scored 3 in their two league games under Lambert and will get some opportunities to add to that tally here if West Brom continue to concede good chances. Two draws against Preston and Reading is a commendable start to his reign but the Suffolk side need to turn those all too familiar draws into wins sooner rather than later.

Team News

Ipswich are likely to remain unchanged from last time out and have no new injury concerns. Ellis Harrison, Tom Adeyemi, Teddy Bishop and Emyr Huws remain on the treatment table though.

Kyle Bartley and Chris Brunt are doubts for the Baggies.

Potential Ipswich Starting XI: Bialkowski, Spence, Chambers, Pennington, Knudsen, Skuse, Downes, Chalobah, Edwards, Roberts, Sears.

Potential West Brom Starting XI: Johnstone, Gibbs, Hegazi, Dawson, Adarabioyo, Phillips, Livermore, Morrison, Barnes, Rodriguez, Gayle.

Betting Odds

  • Ipswich – 18/5
  • Draw – 5/2
  • West Brom – 19/20

The Verdict

Many will be piling in on the near even-money on West Brom, but I can’t trust their defence enough to back them at odds on. Throw in Ipswich’s penchant for draws (8 this season) and that further hampers enthusiasm on the quotes for the away side.

Instead I’m going to plump for goals at both ends with BTTS chalked up at a nice 10/11 with Betfred.

West Brom are a serious threat going forward. They’re quick out wide and have Barnes cutting in, Gayle running in behind. However Ipswich have found some scoring form finally and should have a few opportunities here, especially with home advantage.
