Group H leaders Juventus could guarantee first place and a spot in the Champions League knockout stages with a win over second placed Manchester United in Turin on Wednesday night.
Massimiliano Allegri’s side will be full of confidence going into this one after beating United on their own patch just a fortnight ago.
The Old Lady turned up in Manchester along with Red Devil’s hero Cristiano Ronaldo and largely outplayed the home side over the course of the 90 minutes; winning by a Paulo Dybala goal to nil.
The Turin-based side are also flying domestically, sitting six points clear in first place having dropped only two points all season, and the Italian side will welcome back one of their own favourites just as the United fans did two weeks ago.
Paul Pogba spent four years at Juve, winning four Serie A titles, two Coppa Italia’s and two Supercoppa Italiana’s and the Frenchman travels back to Italy with a resurgent Manchester United side.
Jose Mourinho’s team, despite being heavily criticised for most of the season, have won their last two matches, and were unlucky not to beat Chelsea the week before, with victory being snatched away from them in the sixth minute of added on time at Stamford Bridge thanks to a late, late Ross Barkley equaliser.
While the wins against Everton and Bournemouth were positive, United must certainly improve on their last European outing against Juventus, where they mustered only two attempts on target and, despite being at home, only had 39% possession.
This is the first of two vital games in Man United’s season as they face Pep Guardiola’s rampant City side in the Manchester Derby on Sunday, but Mourinho’s men just put that to the back of their minds as they can ill afford to be anything but their best on Wednesday against a very strong Juventus side.
Mario Mandzukic (ankle), Douglas Costa (muscular) and Blaise Matuidi (hip) are all injury doubts for the home side.
Meanwhile, Manchester United will give a late fitness test to Romelu Lukaku, who missed his side’s 2-1 win over Bournemouth at the weekend.
Fellaini, Dalot and Valencia are all confirmed absentees.
Potential Juventus Starting XI: Szczesny, Cancelo, Bonucci, Chiellini, Sandro, Pjanic, Bentacur, Khedira, Cuadrado, Dybala, Ronaldo.
Potential Man Utd Starting XI: De Gea, Young, Smalling, Lindelof, Shaw, Matic, Pogba, Herrera, Martial, Rashford, Sanchez.
Stats & Facts
- Last month's result at Old Trafford ended United's three-match winning streak against Juventus, which began with their famous 3-2 comeback semi-final win in Turin en route to the treble in 1999.
- Juve’s last four wins against United have all been by the same 1-0 scoreline.
- United’s last match in Turin ended in a stunning 3-0 win for the Red Devil’s, a game in which Ryan Giggs bagged a brace and Ruud Van Nistelrooy put the icing on the cake for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.
Head To Head
- Juventus 6
- Draws 2
- Man United 5
- Juventus 3/5
- Draw – 3/1
- Man U – 11/2 (Betfred)
Expect United to sit deep, in typical Mourinho fashion, and attempt to smother Juventus’ attacking prowess.
However, to gain a positive result, the Red Devil’s must be clinical on the counter attack; otherwise the result in Turin is looking pretty ominous.
Preventing defeat to the Old Lady may prove a stretch too far for this Manchester United side at the moment, and it’s hard to look past a certain Portuguese player contributing to their demise.
