This Thursday night sees Champions League chasing Lazio host relegation threatened Empoli at the Stadio Olimpico.
The home side are amongst five sides who boast realistic aims of getting that fourth spot (Milan 36 points, Atalanta 35 points, Roma 35 points, Lazio 35 points, Sampdoria 33 points). This game offers them the chance to jump into that final Champions League spot, before the other sides play later this week.
Ciro Immobile is a doubt for the game, which will affect Lazio slightly, given how important he is for goals. However, they come into the game against an Empoli side who are yet to win a game away from home in the league this season.
The away side are just one point above the drop zone currently and are without a win in eight games, a run stretching back to the start of December. With it just being a one-point cushion, Empoli need to start picking up some points, but this does not look like a game where they can achieve much.
Both sides are often involved in the goals so this could be another high-scoring game. Empoli have only ever beaten Lazio four times in their history and never have they won in the capital. In fact, only four times in the 21 matches between these two sides has the away side won the match.
Ciro Immobile is a doubt for this game after picking up an injury in the win over Frosinone on Monday night. Marco Parolo is suspended so the midfield might need a re-shuffle.
Antonio La Gumina is still recovering from an injury so Diego Farias should start. Rade Krunic will most likely to drop back into midfield.
Potential Lazio Starting XI: Strakosha; Bastos, Acerbi, Radu; Marusic, Milinkovic-Savic, Leiva, Berisha, Lulic; Correa; Caicedo
Potential Empoli Starting XI: Provedel; Veseli, Silvestre, Rasmussen; Di Lorenzo, Krunic, Bennacer, Traore, Pasqual; Farias, Caputo
Head To Head
- These two sides have played 21 matches against each other, with Lazio winning 12 of those games, five draws and Empoli have only ever beaten Lazio four times.
Key Stats & Facts
- Lazio have won four of the last four meetings in all competitions between these two sides.
- Empoli have failed to win any of their last 12 away league matches.
- Lazio have been winning at both half-time and full-time in seven of their last nine home games against Empoli.
- Lazio – 4/11
- Draw – 17/4
- Empoli – 17/2
Lazio are undoubtedly favourites to win this game at 4/11 and considering Empoli’s form away from home this season (0 wins from 10 away matches) it is very difficult to see anything other than a victory here for the home side.
The angle I like the look of for this one is Lazio to win and BTTS at 7/4 with Coral. Empoli have seen BTTS in 15 of their 22 league games so far (68%) and have scored in their away games against Napoli and Fiorentina in their last five.
Empoli, who sit one point clear of the relegation zone, are the third highest goal scorers in the bottom half of the league, whilst also conceding the most goals in Serie A. Goals are certainly the way to go and Lazio have also seen BTTS in 13 of their 22 (59%) league games, so goals certainly look the way to go.
Lazio have lost just three times at home this season (to Juventus, Inter and Napoli) and their record against bottom half sides reads P12 W9 D3, showing that they are consistent in games that they should be winning. Both teams don’t have brilliant defences but Lazio will have too much for Empoli to contend with, even if they grab a goal themselves.
