The premier league 2019/20 season kicks off at Anfield on Friday night with Champions League winners Liverpool playing host to Premier League newcomers Norwich City.

Liverpool have had a quiet summer on the transfer front with Jurgen Klopp keen to stress that keeping his main stars is just as good as bringing new ones in. He does have Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain back who will be like a new signing, he'll add craft and creativity to a midfield that was slightly lacking in this facets last term. Klopp will be hoping Naby Keita progresses after a slightly disappointing campaign.

The front three of Salah, Mane and Firmino have all been involve in international tournaments over the summer and they'll need ample rests at the right times you'd imagine to one) get the best out of them an two) prevent any fatigue based injuries. But it was Liverpool's backline that surprises many last season, Virgil Van Dijk was a colossus at the back and they defended from the front.

Norwich were exciting in the Championship last season and went up as champions despite struggling in the first month or two. Some fans were questioning Daniel Farke but the hierarchy beloved in him and their faith has been repaid.

They've got an interesting mix of players, many of whom have been brought in from the continent but they have complemented well with the homegrown players from the impressive academy at Carrow Road.

They have an identity and that could go a long way to possible survival in the big league. They'll fancy themselves to cause a few upsets and their attractive playing style will garner many fans this season I think. There will be an onus on Teemu Pukki to fire them in once again. Last seasons top scorer has drawn interesting from the likes of Benfica but the Canaries have held onto him and they'll be all the better for it.

Team News

James Milner And Sadio Mane are doubts for the hosts whilst Nathaniel Clyne is ruled out.

Norwich are without Christoph Zimmerman, Alex Tettey and Louis Thompson whereas Tim Klose is not 100% fit but may still play.

Potential Liverpool Starting XI: Allison, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Wijnaldum, Henderson, Fabinho, Origi, Salah, Firmino.

Potential Norwich Starting XI: Fahrmann, Aarons, Godfrey, Klose, Lewis, Vrancic, Trybull, Buendia, Stiepermann, Hernandez, Pukki.

Key Stats & Facts

  • Liverpool have seen over 2.5 goals land in 6 of their last 7 games against Norwich.
  • Liverpool are undefeated in their last 38 premier league home games
  • The last meeting between the pair on Merseyside saw Norwich go to Anfield and get a 1-1 draw back in 2015.

Betting Odds

  • Liverpool – 2/13
  • Draw – 9/1
  • Norwich – 25/1

The Verdict

I do think the prices are skewed a bit too heavily in favour of Liverpool here. It's not often you see a team as short as 1/8 on opening game. They've had a poor pre-season for what it's worth but did look better against Man City last week.

I think Norwich can trouble them here and will play with belief in themselves. Ultimately I'd expect the Reds to run out winners but I wouldn't rule out the brave canaries from getting on the scoresheet. They were unstoppable going forward for much of last season and there no pressure on them to get a result here which could play into their hands.

If we chuck both teams to score into the equation then we boost the skinny quotes on Liverpool to a much more attractive 2/1 (BoyleSports). I am aware how good Liverpool were at the back last season but they've looked vulnerable over the summer and I like Norwich's philosophy.
