The EFL kicks off as usual on Friday night with a game from the Championship. This time around it sees newcomers Luton Town host Middlesbrough in what promises to be a very intriguing encounter.

Luton cruised their way to league 1 promotion and we’re worthy of their accolade as title winners, can they make the big step up to the championship though? They’ll certainly fancy themselves especially at their Bedfordshire base, they went the entire 18/19 campaign without losing there. A commendable feat.

They have a new number 1 at the helm in Graeme Jones and this is his debut as a first team manager after being the assistant to Roberto Martinez at several clubs, his coaching credentials are strong but with him being untested as the head honcho I will reserve judgement for the time being.

A big blow for Luton was losing dynamic full backs James Justin and Jack Stacey to premier league duo Leicester and Bournemouth respectively. Decent at defending but superb going forward and linking up with the midfield and strikers, they will be missed. The Hatters do still have forward threats though with James Collins leading the line and the likes of Harry Cornick.

Middlesbrough have also made a managerial change with ex club player Jonathan Woodgate being appointed. Chairman Steve Gibson along with Woodgate have promised a more refreshing attacking approach compared to the agricultural football served up by Tony Pulis.

They’ve not done loads in the transfer market but there’s a buzz around the right-knit squad. The few additions they have made in Marc Bola and Marcus Browne will add a youthful energy and add much needed competition. They’ll be involved in a few more goal heavy games this season for sure.

Team News

Alan Sheehan is out for the hosts whereas Dael Fry is the only absentee for Middlesbrough.

Potential Luton Starting XI: Sluga, Cranie, Bradley, Pearson, Galloway, Tunnicliffe, Mpanzu, Shinnie, Lee, Mcmanaman, Collins.

Potential Middlesbrough Starting XI: Randolph, Shotton, Ayala, McNair, Friend, Howson, Wing, Saville, Johnson, Browne, Assombalonga.

Betting Odds

  • Luton – 9/5
  • Draw – 12/5
  • Middlesbrough – 9/5

The Verdict

With Luton’s original attacking football playing the ball through midfield and creating chances will carry on you’d think, they were excellent at home scoring all the time. This is a step up in class though and the even nature of the contest is reflected in the match odds. Instead I’ll swerve that and plump for a 2 point play on both teams to score at 17/20 with MarathonBet.

I’ll also take a bit of the 8/1 enhanced odds from SkyBet on both main strikers scoring, James Collins and Britt Assombalonga. It’s the two players who are charged with scoring the goals and they should both be on penalties too. 8/1 looks like a nice little boost.
