Chelsea continue their Europa League campaign with a trip to Swedish outfit Malmo on Thursday evening.
The Blues enter the game off the back of an embarrassing 6-0 mauling away to Man City in the Premier League on Sunday. They were outclassed in every department and lacked both fight and team spirit.
That was Chelsea’s third consecutive away defeat in the Premier League, following 2-0 and 4-0 losses to Arsenal and Bournemouth respectively, which has lead to uncertainty around Maurizio Sarri’s future at the club. For me, it would be a surprise if the Italian was indeed sacked at this stage of the season, even by Chelsea’s standards.
In the Europa League, Chelsea have an almost perfect record however, with 5 wins and a draw, scoring 12 goals during that period and conceding just 3.
The likes of Andreas Christensen, Ross Barkley, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Olivier Giroud have all been heavily involved in this season’s competition and will likely be part of the starting eleven again on Thursday.
Opponents Malmo, who ended their domestic league campaign towards the back end of November, finishing 3rd in the Allsvenskan, haven’t played a competitive game since the 13th December.
Excluding qualifiers, they have W2-D3-L1 in the Europa League this season and remain unbeaten at home. In fact, they have failed to taste defeat in any of their last 8 ties in the competition (including qualifiers).
They will be up against it with the visit of Chelsea however, even despite the away side’s poor recent form.
Malmo have a fully fit squad to chose from. New signings Adi Nalic, Anel Ahmedhodzic and Dusan Melicharek have all been added to the club’s Europa League squad ahead of the knockout stages.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek has not travelled with Chelsea due to a back injury.
Potential Malmo Starting XI: Dahlin, Safari, Bengtsson, Nielsen, Rieks, Lewicki, Bachirou, Christiansen, Vindheim, Antonsson, Rosenberg
Potential Chelsea Starting XI: Arrizabalaga, Emerson, Christensen, Cahill, Azpilicueta, Kovacic, Ampadu, Kanté, Willian, Giroud, Callum Hudson-Odoi
Head To Head
- The two sides have never met.
Key Stats & Facts
- Malmo are unbeaten in their last 8 games at home in the Europa League.
- Under 2.5 goals occurred in 5 of Malmo’s 6 games in the Europa League group stages.
- Chelsea have kept 4 clean sheets in 6 games in the Europa League this season.
- Chelsea won 3 of their 6 group stage games by a 1-0 scoreline.
- Malmo 9/1
- Draw 17/4
- Chelsea 2/5
For me, this is all about Chelsea’s approach and attitude towards the game.
After Sunday’s humiliation, The Blues will welcome a quick return to action and this might just be the perfect fixture to get back on track, against a side who haven’t played competitively for 2 months.
With important games coming up over the next few weeks, Maurizio Sarri will no doubt want to put the tie to bed in the first leg and I believe his side are capable of doing so.
Maybe rather surprisingly, the Italian has tended to field strong starting elevens in the competition this season and I don’t see why that will change here.
Taking all of the above into consideration, I’m keen to get with The Pensioners and I think there’s value to be had in a number of markets.
