Man City v Schalke Betting Preview, Odds & Tips
- Date: 12/03/19
- Time: 19:45pm
- Venue: Etihad Stadium
- Channel: BT Sport
Manchester City made hard work of their away trip in Gelsenkirchen but came from behind to gain a 3-2 win in the end. Two penalties were their downfall but with 3 away goals and a clear gulf in class between the two squads, take out those penalties and the Germans only recorded an xG output of 0.22. Therefore it's no surprise that the Citizens are as short as 1/200 in the ‘to qualify' market.
Schalke are having a terrible season in the Bundesliga. They sit 14th in their domestic league with a meagre 23 points from 25 games and they're winless in 7 losing 5 of those. They're giving up an average xG of over 2 in their last 7 as well, poor results are being backed up with poor performances. Domenico Tedesco requires a strong recruitment drive in the summer.
City on the other hand are strong on the data, they're averaging 2.6 goals per game and concede just 0.7 per game, figures which also tally up with their underlying performance metrics. Even with a few injury doubts they should seal progression to the quarter finals quite comfortably.
City are without Nicolas Otamendi and Fernandinho, both of whom are suspended. Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne and John Stones are doubts.
Schalke are without key players Alessandro Schopf and Daniel Caliguiri for this one whilst Omar Mascarell is a doubt.
Potential Man City Starting XI: Ederson, Walker, Kompany, Laporte, Zinchenko, Gundogan, D Silva, B Silva, Sane, Sterling, Jesus.
Potential Schalke Starting XI: Fahrmann, McKennie, Stambouli, Sane, Nastasic, Mendyl, Serder, Bentaleb, Embolo, Skryzbski, Burgstaller.
Key Stats & Facts

- Man City have scored 2 or more in their last 6 UCL games.
- Man City have won 5 of their last 6 matches in the UCL.
- Man City – 1/6
- Draw – 15/2
- Schalke – 22/1
As always, it's difficult to find value in Man City games because they're so short in the betting. This is also a game they don't need to win so it's hard to know what mindset they'll be in.
However, the raw facts are Man City are class and Schalke are awful. The Germans will have to come out at some point here to have any chance of progressing so I'm happy to back goals. Over 3.5 is priced up at 19/20 with BetVictor and I'll have a 2 point play on that.
I'm also happy to have a go on the 11/1 that City win 3-1. It's been there most frequent scoreline when playing hosts, it also landed against Watford at the weekend. Schalke have to try and score but City should have enough firepower to get by.
