This is definitely one of the best draws this competition has thrown up. The last time the sides met in the competition it was an absolute classic. Barcelona managed a 3-1 win despite it being played in England on so called “home turf” for United. Messi scored a magical goal to put Barca in the lead before David Villa all but ended the game. It has been a long time since that game however United haven’t made a final since then. Barca have only made one final since which was their 3-1 win against Juventus in Berlin 2015.

It’s safe to say it’s unlikely the game will live up to the previous meeting. Barcelona are dominating in La Liga, they sit 11 points clear of Atletico Madrid and with only 7 games left it’s hard to see how they don’t lift the title. United on the other hand see themselves in a tough battle for top 4 domestically, however this is a much more favourable position then when Solskjaer first took charge. It is clear that United’s chance of European football next season is under threat, but a good campaign this time round wouldn’t go a miss for the Red Devils.

Barcelona come into the game after a 2-0 home display against Atletico Madrid, a game that was made all the more easier by Diego Costa’s early sending off, however it did take them until the 85th minute to break the deadlock. 2 goals in as many minutes from Suarez and Messi sealed the points and sent Barca even further clear at the top. United had the luxury of a weekend off, which may benefit them in preparation for this game, and with the amount of injuries they’ve had they will relish from the break.

Team News

Sanchez will still be out for the hosts, however he doesn’t feature in the squad when fit anyway. Bailly is also ruled out. Darmian and Valencia will both be absent, however that isn’t a surprise.

Barcelona are without young starlight Ousmane Dembele, however summer recruit Malcolm has been in fine form during his absence. They are also without midfielder Rafinha who has missed almost the entire season.

Potential Manchester United Starting XI: De Gea, Young, Lindelof, Smalling, Shaw, Matic, Pogba, Herrera, Rashford, Martial, Lukaku

Potential Barcelona Starting XI: Ter Stegen, Roberto, Umtiti, Lenglet, Alba, Busquets, Arthur, Rakatic, Coutinho, Suarez, Messi

Head To Head

  • The sides have met 8 times in the 21st century, both winning 3 a piece and one stalemate draw.
  • The last 5 games have also come as stalemates, with 2 wins each and a draw.
  • 2 of the last 8 meetings have ended goalless.

Key Stats & Facts

  • This is the first time the sides have met since the final in 2011, in which Barcelona came out victorious in their famous 3-1 win at Wembley.
  • Barcelona have only lost 2 games since the turn of 2019.

Betting Odds

  • Manchester United 5/2
  • Draw 13/5
  • Barcelona 21/20

The Verdict

I have to get on the away side here, given the difference in seasons these two are having. Barca do look slightly short at just a touch over even money, given it is on home turf for United. You can get Barcelona to win and over 2.5 goals on Ladbrokes at just short of 2/1, which has much more appeal. To back this claim up both United have only failed to register over 2.5 goals in 1 of their last 5 games. Barcelona are actually averaging 4.3 goals per game in their last 5.

The other play that I am taking a punt on is a 3-1 correct score. Barcelona will put everything into this first leg as registering as many away goals as possible will put them in a very strong position to qualify. On top of this it is rare United don’t score at home, only failing in 2 of their last 10 games, and although Barca are a huge threat going forward, their defence isn’t exactly breath taking. They’ve conceded 6 goals in their last 5 games, and against much inferior opposition to United. The 3-1 correct score also landed the last time these two met in the competition, however that was over 7 years ago.

Recommended Bets

  • 2pts – Barcelona to win and over 1 goal – 19/10 (Ladbrokes)
  • 1pt – 3-1 Barcelona correct score – 15/1 (BetVictor)
