This game is definitely set up to be one hell of a showdown. Two sides come into this in under achieving seasons. Chelsea got off to a good start but since the turn of the year it has mostly gone downhill for Sari’s side, however they are currently occupying 4th spot. They sit only 1 point clear from Arsenal and 3 points ahead of United, so a win against United here should all but rule them out of the top 4 challenge for good, and having excited Europe it would seem all the more likely the club will miss out on Champions League football again for the 2nd time in 3 seasons.
Chelsea come into the game on the back of a pretty poor result against Burnley, in which it finished 2-2, with 4 goals in the first half telling the full story. Burnley exploited Chelsea perfectly and used it to their advantage and then held out the game to secure the point, although many may call the style anti-football, it is difficult for teams such as them to compete in full with the resources and players they have.
United come into the game on the back of a defeat in the derby to City. United held strong for the first half and actually looked a lot better than usual, but early into the second half City started creeping up and eventually once they got the goal it was all one way traffic from there, and that puts City into the driving seat for the League with only 3 games left. United have problems of their own though to even start worrying about the gulf in class between them and rivals Manchester City, but losing in the manner they did will frustrate the fans even more which was evident by the lack of empty seats before the final whistle was blown.
United have only Valencia who is still out and has been for the full season.
Chelsea have long term injury to youngster Callum Hudson-Odoi, after the winger has had surgery on his ACL. Alonso, Rudiger and Kante are all doubts but Sari is confident they should all return in time for the clash.
Potential Man United Starting XI: De Gea, Young, Smalling, Lindelof, Shaw, Pogba, Matic, Lingard, Rashford, Lukaku, Martial
Potential Chelsea Starting XI: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Alonso, Kante, Jorginho, Barkley, Hazard, Higuain, Willian
Head To Head
- The last 5 meetings have equalled out between the two, with a pair of wins each and a single draw.
- Historically however United have the better of the Blue’s, winning 78 to Chelsea’s 54 wins, and 50 draws.
Key Stats & Facts
- United have lost 4 of their last 5 fixtures, they are currently in the worst form they have been in under Solskjaer.
- There have only been 7 goals in the last 5 meetings between the pair, with 2 0-0 draws.
- Man United 13/8
- Draw 11/5
- Chelsea 13/8
The odds probably just about sum this game up. I wouldn’t like to back either team on the outright, especially not at those prices and with the inconsistency of them both.
One angle I like the look of is a similar theme I follow whenever he is playing, and that’s Chelsea’s starlight Eden Hazard to score anytime. I think just shy of 2/1 is very generous, especially given Everton managed to put 4 past United’s back line – Hazard could do some real damage of his own. His form has dipped as of late but with the amount of pressure on his shoulders, especially with the injury to Hudson-Odoi I am backing the Belgian all the way.
